This has been going on for a week now -- through 2 online chats, and then one phone call 4 days ago in which the problem got escalated, and they will contact me, but when?  Emailed them yesterday with a bunch of data like the above.

Spark VDSL, but not really -- usual down was around 18, up around 1.4, long way from exchange.  Wired tests -- all much like this.  Auckland East. Done many power cycles.

No fun at all on OneDrive or on VPN remote connections.

I'm looking for words that I can say to Spark that will galvanize them into action!

Probably more beneficial galvanising yourself into action. These problems are usually related to your network, not your ISP's. Start by posting your vdsl sync stats.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do I do this on a Huawei 630b?

Not sure exactly on that model, but look for down and upstream sync rates. That will help determine if it's a physical line issue or something saturating the connection.

browse through the modem till you find something with  the following, attenuation, SNR, down and up sync speeds/rates, possibly be on the status page or the DSL page.

also go here and tell us what it says for current speed for your address

That upstream rate looks pretty poor. Do you have a master filter installed (dedicated modem outlet)?

either way you are connected at 20mbps so should be seeing about 18mbps on a speedtest

your issues are more than likely inside your network not with the VDSL service

You are testing with a wired connected not a wifi one?

Yes, as I said, testing on wired Ethernet.

I have a coffeebaron-installed splitter.

Inside my network?  I've changed nothing since I was getting reasonable speeds.

I'll start disconnecting things and see what happens.

Thanks all.

The sync rates are consistent with your older speed tests which probably means there's not a lot of change in the physical line.

I'd be looking for something in your network doing a lot of uploading (Dropbox iCloud etc). This can saturate the upstream connection which will cause packet loss everywhere (up and down). Given your distance to exchange and therefore low upload rate it wouldn't take much to saturate.

Thanks, RunningMan.  I've just been through disconnecting all Ethernet connections, and all wireless connections, and I get no change (long ping times (>300 ms), bad upload (.02 to .7), losses all over the place between 7% and 95%).  It wouldn't be the modem, would it?  D'you think I should try a factory reset (it is a Spark-supplied modem)?

I did notice there is an update to the HG 630b, which I shall install as soon as people let me have complete control of the network for a decent time.

All of us use OneDrive -- that will be a possibility, then, except that when I disconnected the wired network to both wife's and child's machines, it didn't get any better -- unless it is my OneDrive on my test machine.

Clutching at straws here!

You were absolutely right, RunningMan and Jase2985. Lots of testing over the weekend, and found the answer:  OneDrive on wife's computer decided of it's own volition to re-upload all of her stuff (we're talking 60 GB here) even though none of it had changed.  Given our abysmal upload speed anyway, this must have been going on for the last week (she never turns it off).  Don't know why I didn't see this when I disconnected her machine above.  I unlinked onedrive and all is back to normal now.  I also upgraded my modem firmware, but that did not help our connection speeds at all.

I like onedrive -- it has saved a few rashers of bacon over the last year but I'm looking at it askance now.  However, I do wish it would work as a dumb drive, and not try to be intelligent.  Roll on fibre (March 2017 dv), when happenings like this won't matter so much.

I also need to say sorry to Spark, I'll never doubt them again, and thanks to all of you who pointed me at my own network.

That (re)sync problem is a real PITA. Even if you change computers you have to worry like blazes about your files wanting to upload again!!

Got caught a couple of years ago so decided to take care of third level backup myself.

Upgraded a friend's comp recently and he had 60GB on Google Drive so it was worry time about a re-upload being needed. I think there is more intelligence around resyncing now but I moved that comp off my network  real quick, just in case!

Right! Part of my problem also may have been that I set up OneDrive as a pure backup, and used RoboForm to collect changed stuff from the HDD and save it to the OneDrive folder.  I've noticed in the past that minor time changes of a second or so between creation dates on the HDD and the backup (onedrive or a HDD) can result in re-copying even though I am using /XO /FFT switches.  May also happen on the change to Summer Time.  I'd get none of these problems, I think, were I using OneDrive as the primary place to keep work, which I guess is what it is designed for.
