Recently purchased a Huawei M2-802L (LTE) from NL to use when out and about away from Wifi without having to have the phone hot spotting. It is a great device for the money I have to say. The one hangup I have at the moment is getting data to work with it on Skinny.

The root issue is the inability to add the Skinny APN's to the device.

When the Skinny SIM is inserted there are no APN's listed in settings. When adding an APN the settings can be entered, as soon as you hit save it returns to the APN list and the APN is not there. There are no APN's listed at all to edit. Its just grey 'Internet' and 'MMS' headings with no APN's under them.

So far I've tried:

  • Using a Spark* and 2D sim (APN's for both load straight away, data works)
  • Factory resetting device
  • Forcing to 3G/forcing to 4G
  • Manually selecting Skinny and Spark
  • Every combination of the above 2
  • Various tricks mentioned online (switching from Airplane mode and back a few times; resetting device 3 times in a row; standing on one leg, with one arm behind back and other waving towards the sun while singing the Turkish national anthem)
  • Trying Skinny sim in another device (Note 4 - worked fine)
  • Updating device (none available)
  • Calling Skinny support (great, but ended up saying it is likely Huawei's issue)
  • Calling Huawei support (not so great, ended up blaming Skinny)

Huawei support tried to say that the device doesn't support Spark/Skinny frequencies - which it does. I had to read out their own spec sheet and explain what LTE was to the helpdesk fella before he would admit it does. He couldn't understand the difference between 3G/LTE (or what an APN was) which really didn't serve to put much faith in his ability to help. I ended the call promising to do another factory reset and calling back if that didn't work (which I doubt it will...). His last comment was the find the warrant card/receipt and return it to NL if need be.

Skinny support, to their credit, have been great. Very patient through both email and phone. We've worked through their check list (mainly above) with them finally admitting defeat and suggesting it could be a dodgy sim (which is unlikely as it works in other devices) or more likely it's because Huawei hasn't added their sim to their software (or something along those lines?). I'm going to pick up another Skinny sim this afternoon and try that just in case.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I wanted to use Skinny for the $16 plan (with the rollover data) but I can if need be use Spark or 2D.

Thanks

* When I inserted the Spark SIM their APN loaded as well as a dozen Skinny APNs (all the ones I had tried to add manually with the Skinny Sim inserted). Selecting Skinny and than restarting/adding Skinny Sim didn't work.

Can you please confirm that you have tried the following:

- Insert Spark SIM and select Spark APN

- Remove Spark SIM and Insert Skinny SIM without changing any settings and test data

You have to have an APN set, but if it is incorrect this should be resolved to the Skinny APN at the network level so data should work with the Spark APN and Skinny SIM (as long as you are in New Zealand).

Cheers

Paul

Gidday LivingSkinny,

Thanks for your reply. I have not tried setting the Spark APN and than inserting the Skinny sim, I'll give that a crack when I get home. I have picked up another Skinny sim and tried that with the same result (no APNs on new Skinny sim).

Cheers

@LivingSkinny - tried as you suggested and it just reverted back to no APN's.

I've just done another factory reset and the issue continues. One of the fellas from the Device team at Skinny has been in contact so we will see what he comes up with. Cheers @LivingSkinny

Update for anyone interested: The issue has been resolved with a firmware update. Thanks must go to Alex from Skinny's Device Support Team who has been in regular contact over the last week and a bit while his contact at Huawei arranged for a firmware update which resolved the SIM issue. An update was pushed to the device this morning and the APN's are active and data is a go.

Thanks @LivingSkinny and your team for the great result.

Edit: speeling
