Has anyone configured an HG659b to enable Wake-On-LAN from WAN? I've tried assigning a static IP to the system that I want to be able to wake and forwarded the same UDP port as in my WOL app but no dice. It works fine from within the LAN, so either I've misconfigured the forwarding or something is eating the packets. Tried disabling the firewall, didn't help.

How would external WAN sites work with WOL? It's a broadcast packet that wouldn't get routed over the Internet.

Just use a low end linux box like a TPLink TL-WR802N as those things are cheap as chips. Flash OpenWRT on it and you're away.

So if I sent a WOL packet to my static IP address from an external site it'll just disappear into the ether? If this is the case, how will adding another router help?

Yes... the WoL Packet is a layer 2 frame. Unless there is something special in your router (that isn't part of the HG659 from my understanding.) Then there is no special directed broadcast you can do from the Internet to WoL your PC.
