My Mum is connected with broadband via Spark, and has an Xtra login name. However her e-mail is with another provider.

I have been trying for two days now to add this third-party e-mail address. First I logged into Xtra webmail but found I couldn't even go into the options (using Firefox) - this generated an error message asking to "try again later". This has been the same error for two days. So I changed to an old Internet Explorer which allowed me into the Options. Trying to verify her address and clicking on the link gives

"The system is experiencing some problems, please try again in a few minutes. (Error: #77231)"

This has been like this since last night. Is there any way to verify her third party e-mail address? She needs to be able to send from it using her Xtra address. I don't feel calling the helpdesk will do much.

Anyone else able to verify a third party address successfully at the moment?

I'm pretty sure you can't use spark/xtra to send or verify another ISPs email. Don't think any will let you relay messages.

You can, I have it setup for my own Xtra address and the option to add a third-party address is under the settings in webmail...

Should I go to Yahoo directly? I would like to get this sorted sooner rather than later...

Okay, update. The options are now working again but the address can't be verified. I get the confirmation e-mail sent, but upon clicking the link to verify her address it gives the same error as above (The system is experiencing some problems, please try again in a few minutes. (Error: #77231). Can I add it manually? or some other way without having to verify it?

Edit: can't delete addresses either, this time I get the error "Oops! There's a problem. (#77231,90000) The system is experiencing some problems, please try again in a few minutes." This system seems to be quite broken...

It's Spark/xtra email, it's working as intended.

I don't quite follow what you are trying to do, can't you register a free Gmail account for her to use instead?

Or if you are trying to forward her email from her "third party email address" to xtra why not just install Thunderbird and set it up her for in there so at least for now she can use Thunderbird for this so called third party email address and that xtra crap on the website?

Sorry don't quite follow what you are trying to do.

A quick Google on "Error: #77231" reveals lots of info on this, have you tried looking into any of those?

Try adding your alternate non-Yahoo email address on this page:

https://edit.yahoo.com/commchannel/manage

Since you have already tried adding it through the Yahoo mail classic interface it might already exist.

I think as long as the alternate email address appears on that page Yahoo mail servers will accept outgoing messages with that email as the From header.

What is the first part of the email address you are trying to add? (Before the @)

There are a few words that Yahoo don't allow you to use.

Spark is a partner. The email platform is Yahoo

lNomNoml: Her address is @orcon.net.nz, and I am trying to add it as a third-party e-mail address. I did this previously on my own @xtra account and it works, just it doesn't seem to want to work anymore. She is trying to send from this @orcon address from her Spark (Xtra) connection, but it won't send it as the verification process (which I'm trying to follow above) doesn't work. If it was working as intended I would be able to add her third-party address successfully, like I did with mine.

yitz: thanks for that suggestion, I will give that a try.

Edit: same error, but I will get her to try sending again and see what happens. Thanks again.

Are you trying to add your Orcon email account to Yahoo so you access all your email accounts through the Yahoo Mail web interface or mobile app?

Connecting accounts seems to not be supported on Yahoo Xtra email so you might be better off signing up for a plain yahoo account (and connecting your xtra and orcon accounts to that) in that case.

Only for the past 5+ years, on & off (seriously)
Do whats suggested above, send via Orcon .

xtra email is actually yahoo. Spark wont be able to offer much help .
or wait a week & it may all start working again.

Although IMO they should under the CGA, as they are the retailer providing the service. If they decide to contract that out to a third party, then they still have to take responsibility for the service, and they should have full control. Really they should be able to set it up for you manually if you call them, if the online way of doing it is down.

Ok thank you for the clarification, I'm not too familiar with what you need to do, however I wish you luck in coming right with it.
