Hi.

ive discovered in the PDF manual, a part on PORT FORWARDING,  but is there a way on the HG659b modem to check, or unblock certain ports ? NOT just forward them, as i dont know if those ports are used by single or multiple devices...

I want to allow these ports.

  • TCP port 37
  • TCP port 80
  • TCP port 443
  • TCP port 2190
  • TCP port 4430
  • TCP port 5005
  • TCP port 5222
  • TCP port 5223
  • TCP port 5224
  • TCP port 7287
  • TCP port 7288
  • TCP port 8000
  • TCP ports 8080-8089
  • TCP port 8101
  • TCP port 8102
  • TCP port 8181
  • TCP port 8200
  • UDP port 37
  • UDP port 123
  • UDP port 2190

I think it's best you let us know what you want to achieve. Lots of those are common services ports so you won't want to forward them unless you are running a server of some description.
If the purpose is for gaming, you should just make sure UPnP is enabled on the router - provided the game utilises it properly that will suffice for keeping nat pinholes open.

TIVO :-

http://support.mytivo.co.nz/index.php?action=artikel&cat=23&id=19

(its the only thing ive got left - long running issue)....

My tivo is connecting outside, but im not receiving (back to tivo) what i want....

There are minimal / zero logs i can see - That allow me to peek at whats going on (or not going on). I suspect things are being blocked.

Is there a way to UNBLOCK / allow all to a particular IP - but normal rules etc regarding my pc /ipad etc ?

EDIT: I did change the wifi firewall to "none" for 10-15 minutes & tried again. but no luck. i think its a port issue...

(ive reset the firewall)

- If its not a port issue, it will be an external problem i cant control)

Some ISP routers simply will not port forward some ports, even DMZ wont allways forward all ports . Just the way it is, it been like that for
umpteen years
The ISPs routers are OK for 99% of home users , thats what they are indended for.
Some ports will require you to reconfig/change the routers management access ports (not allways possible)

Only way around it is to buy another, non ISP router .
I'd guess that some ports are reserved for the ISP(help desk etc) and cant be forwarded

Outgoing shouldnt need ports to be opened on the router (?)

What is your actual problem?

There is no need to set port forwards for a Tivo.

The HG659b has UPNP enabled by default AFAIK so if there's only the one device using the ports, it should sort itself out automatically.

The manual port forwarding configuration interface on that unit is awful, it's implemented in a totally backwards fashion, but can be done if you have to. If the device works, I'd leave it alone. Generally the only time you should need to change anything manually is if you're accessing an internal service from an external device.

Those are outgoing ports (i.e. from inside your local network to the Internet) that shouldn't be blocked, port forwarding is for incoming ports.

Your router and ISP shouldn't be blocking any of them so no need to change anything, something else must be the problem. If you want to be sure go to http://portquiz.net/ and you can test each one for blockage.

Did anyone get any joy with Tivo and HG659b?  Just doesn't want to connect to the Tivo service.

Took the advice from the Tivo manual to re-do setup - now i can't even use the tivo.

Waste of time contacting Spark they just want you to call and pay their techies.

Worked fine for years on my old router and ISP.

This is no doubt related to the other thread on here where people have no TiVo because the service is down in both NZ and Australia.

I'm not convinced by your answer. Tivo website talks of Genie issues, not EPG or connectivity.

Other Tivo users i know are having no trouble, and in fact we weren't either until i tried adding my new SSID for my new Spark supplied HG659b router.  Spark have referred me to the router manufacturer Huawei, fob off! or call their $120 Tech Wizard service.

I have a feeling Spark are blocking port traffic (UPD37?).

Still without Tivo service, which with two little kids, is a bit frustrating.

Thanks.

Spark don't block ports. The issue has nothing to do with them.

Plenty of other users have no service - I'm assuming you haven't read the other thread so here's the link to it - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=114&topicid=205508&page_no=2

There are only two ports that Spark block inbound and you can request for them to be unblocked here: www.spark.co.nz/port25

Port 25 (SMTP / Outbound email) and also Port 53 (DNS for domain resolution).

Port 25 is blocked to prevent you from being used as a Spam host to mass-email / spam the world. You need to route all SMTP traffic via the Spark (Yahoo) SMTP servers or use a different port.

Port 53 is blocked by the same policy to prevent your home broadband router being used as a DNS Relay for DNS amplification attacks. Inbound Port 53 is only allowed from the Spark DNS servers since there are some very old dumb routers that use port 53 as the source for DNS requests.

Spark don't block anything else and the stuff that is blocked can be unblocked if you want it but you should know about the security ramifications of doing that.

It's Tivo's service that is broken, and nothing to do with Spark blocking your service. My Tivo at home works fine apart from the EPG being broken for a few days when the Hybrid servers went offline.
