I'm switching over from Slingshot ADSL to Bigpipe VDSL. I currently have dyndns configured which works completely to my satisfaction.

When ordering Bigpipe I did not choose the static IP option.

Does this mean that I'm going to be CGNATed and my dynamic dns setup is going to stop working?

that is correct if you dont go with a static IP you will be placed on CGNAT

Have heard multiple stories from people saying some providers like/similar to dyndns work and some don't. I'd recommend leaving it and see if it works with CGNAT for you and your setup - if it doesn't work and you're sure it's down to CGNAT then you can just submit a support for a Static IP.

Because Slingshot don't use CG-NAT.

Because Slingshot don't use CG-NAT.

How come? If I understand it correctly, the problem CG-NAT solves is shortage of ip addresses. Is Slingshot not a subject to such shortage? Do they have a bigger pool?

Your dynamic DNS will continue to "work" with CGNAT, in the sense that it will update to "your" IP address. The problem is that "your" IP address isn't really yours, and therefore your dynamic domain name will be completely useless as it won't point to your router/network.

I'd imagine that anyone technically inclined enough to post on Geekzone would be well spent to pay the pretty reasonable one-off fee and get a real IP address.

I went through a few weeks of unintended pseudo-CGNAT (double NAT on my network due to an inability to configure the damn Vigor 130 properly) and it was horrible. Couldn't connect to any of my services. It felt like using the internet with one arm tied behind my back.

Let's just say I found it useful to be able to change ip by recycling the modem to avoid certain... inconveniences.

But yeah, getting the static IP is what I'll have to do so it seems.

Fair enough, and I do know what you mean. I think Bigpipe used to do a dynamic public IP on request, but this is no longer available and the only public IPs are static.

For me personally the benefits of having a public IP easily outweigh the limited disadvantages of having a static.
