Hey Everyone

We've got some news - this morning we've launched Skinny Direct!

It's a new mobile service by us at Skinny Mobile, but it's only available online at skinnydirect.co.nz

It works in a similar way to our broadband service in that you just add your debit or credit card upon sign up which then repurchases your Combo automatically every 30 days. So no more top ups!

We have 2 Combos available, a $30 Combo with 3GB data or a $50 Combo with 6GB data. Both Combos also come with unlimited NZ calling & texts and free voicemail. Does that put a smile on your dial? We hope so :)

How do we manage such data amounts at those prices? Well, by going direct to us we don't have to pay extra things like rent, commissions etc and we think the people who take this up would most likely prefer to self serve rather than calling us anyway, so we instantly save dollars there. And they go back into the plans.

All on the website, you need to purchase "extra credits" to call 0900, pxt, overseas calls etc

Well I have to say that after looking over the website it's a good deal for the amount of data.

Currently spark is doubling my data for free on my plan but once that runs out (in another 5 months) I will make the jump over :)

Ah, it's a pay monthly service from Skinny. Maybe you should mention that more clearly both in this post and on your website, it took some time to work it out. You probably want to make it easy for people to adopt, not difficult to work out what you're selling.

Seems like it's reasonably priced with plenty of resources. I'll probably stick with the prepay for now, for low users it's still quite a bit cheaper. Some out with a $15 or $20 per month version and I'd probably switch over.

Any reason I shouldn't just switch to skinny direct and grab the $30 combo? Double my data for the same money, and actually have a working online system (unlike spark which seems unable to do much of anything online for data-only plans)
I don't need the txt or minutes at all. Can everything be managed via skinny app?

I've been on Skinny for a few months, it works just the same as Spark - same network. I use the website to top up, but if you get this it's set and forget.

It is still prepaid but the difference is that you have to have a credit or debit card loaded and we do the charge for you automatically when your Combo renews.

This sounds really good. I've long ago turned off the incessant push alerts on the app that happen all every time a renewal is impending, then occurring, then triggering an automatic topup etc etc, but they're all duplicated by a barrage of sms too.

I do miss the simple monthly bill that I used to have on post paid, without all the other noise & rubbish in between. Just don't miss the extra $10-15pm it cost.

There is no reason you can't use just the data part of the Combo. Yes it is all managed via the Skinny Direct app or website (both of which are different to the Skinny Mobile versions).

So if one was to sign up how does the number transfer etc all work. Do we get the sim card sent out first then request the number port (like how 2degrees does it)?

Just follow the 3 step Get Started process on the website.

Step 1 - Select $30 or $50 Combo

Step 2 - Choose to keep your number or select a new number and enter your details. If you choose to keep your number we will ask for the porting info

Step 3 - Enter your credit or debit card details.

We will send out a SIM (unless you are moving from Skinny Mobile in which case you can use the existing one).

The number port will be completed once you activate the Skinny Direct SIM.

I thought Spark Ventures was pretty much independent of the parent company.

Skinny's a quality, budget brand. If Spark didn't have the brand many like myself would've moved to 2degrees, as Spark packages no longer suited me. The new pay monthly plans do seem to compete more directly and will probably take customers from Spark. Competition is good, even if it's with yourself.
