I've already sent a support request to Bigpipe to get some ideas what might be happening, but thought I'd ask here too.

I'm on the Gigabit plan and getting speeds of 860Mb/412Mb (down/up) to the Spark server. However, I've noticed that uploads to various services are hovering around 30-35Mb/s, no matter which service I use (Dropbox, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc) - Presume these servers are sat in the US, of course.

I've even tried uploading a large file to my own MediaTemple server and getting roughly the same upload speed. I won't even mention Crashplan, because that's always pants (even to Sydney).

Now, doing a speed test to LA, I get similar results (around 30Mb/s), so I can see why these speeds are so low, but I was expecting things to be a lot faster.

Are these kinds of speeds to be expected (to the US)?

Erm is that 30Mbps or 240Mbps?

If it is 240Mbps then this is a pretty good speed to be getting to an international server...

Sometimes you have to double-check! Can you also confirm you're using the BigPipe DNS servers?

I for example get around 200Mbit to Google Drive. I also uploaded a 4K video (around 12gb) to YouTube the other night and the average speed was in the 300Mbit mark.

I know what you mean. I did actually have to re-read my post in case my fat fingers did make a typo :)

Now that you mention it, I do use the Getflix (ahem) DNS servers. I'll remove them, and report back in a sec...

Doesn't appear to make any difference. I've just now checked Google Drive to compare with your results, and that's even worse (around 20Mbps). So, I think something is definitely amiss then...

Steam downloads are pretty slow going too, hovers between 40 to 60Mbps.

Speed tests to Spark are really good though! :)

I didn't notice much speed difference with Getflix, although that was on an old budget wireless N laptop on 100/20. That will probably be it though, will be returning one of their IPs for DNS to route it through them with limited bandwidth per user.

Hmm that's weird, have you flushed DNS?

It does indeed seem a bit strange. I'm not at home at the moment to test however will test to some destinations tonight to confirm. Maybe @JoshBigpipe can take a look and comment since they do have a test probe on my connection to play around with.

I just flushed the DNS cache now, rebooted both the router and my machine just to make sure, but doesn't seem to make any difference, unfortunately.

btw, thanks peeps for your help so far. It's good to knock some brains together to get to the bottom of it. :)

Connected directly to the ONT, as directed by Bigpipe this morning, with the same results. Something really strange is going on it seems.

Speed tests to NZ and Sydney servers are all great (in the 800+/300+ Mbps mark). Anything to the US is around 40Mbps/30Mbps.

I'm curious, did you upload to Google Drive via the web interface or their desktop sync? I've just done this myself, and when uploading via their web interface, I get around 160Mbps. With their sync app, it's the normal slow 30Mbps. I tried the same with the other services but they all stick around the 30Mbps mark. Totally confused now...

Web interface.

Google Drive: 240Mbit (140Mbit from my Chromebook).
Dropbox: 180Mbit
Linode: 30Mbit (another host in the US achieves around 30Mbit too via SCP or SFTP)

Hmm, looks like I am getting the same as you afterall. I do see what you mean. SCP to my Linode normally gets around 100Mbit.

I'm wondering if latency could be the reason. It shouldn't make that much difference, maybe something is misconfigured. Can you do a test of half a dozen speed test servers, aiming to get a range of pings?

That's odd. I'm pushing 300Mbit upload to Amazon Cloud Drive right now. I usually get around 80-90Mbit upload per connection to ACD topping out at 300Mbit when I run multiple connections.

Download is another story though - I can only pull down at around 10Mbit from ACD via the browser interface.

I drew a graph, it looks like there is some correleation between ping and bandwidth, but it's not strict.
