Hi there, I got new VDSL installed this Friday 28/10/2016. A Chorus technician installed a dedicated VDSL jack point and went back to the exchange point to enable the VDSL.

However the internet speed is very slow. When I do a speed test I got about 2mbps download and 0.9 upload.

I called Spark, they tossed me through 3 different departments and in the end I gave up.

I need some advice on how to deal with this issue please. Is there anything that I need to do on my modem?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Did you upgrade from ADSL2+ (what speeds did you get) or have you just relocated.

Can you check the obtainable speed at your address and those of your neighbours using this tool:

If your loop length is really 1.8 km then you might be better off on ADSL2+ broadband. 1.0 km is more or less the distance limit for VDSL2 on the Chorus network.

Edwards Ave does not seem to be a VDSL area. The downstream attenuation of 45dB indicates a line a lot longer than 1.8km, or some significant fault on the line. Basically, this is way beyond the reach that VDSL should work at all, so surprised it was even installed.

Any reason you can't order fibre - looks like that is available...

VDSL at 1.8km should not have been provisioned that is too far from the exchange / cabinet

ADSL2+ should be connected or move to Fibre if in coverage

how you got VDSL i dont know but none of the street is in a VDSL area.

But the whole street has fibre

thanks for your replies.

I have upgraded from ADSL to VDSL, The speed before was also very slow, about 1 mbps download and 0.6 upload.

I did check the speed on the chorus website, it says I have ADSL 2mbps. Most of my nearby neighbors appear not to be connected to the chorus network?

The Chorus technician, said that the exchange is located somewhere near to Harvey Norman in Henderson and that is about 1.8 km from my home.

I want to upgrade to fiber. I applied 7 months ago, however still waiting, apparently Chorus can't get my neighbors consent. That is strange because my neighbor already gave me consent online. There are no other neighbors to approve. The property is half share, there are only two houses sharing the driveway.

I think Chorus has some wrong info about the property addresses?

So, until i get fiber, I wanted to upgrade to VDSL for faster speeds. I checked Spark website and it says that is available on Edwards ave. Also the sales person from Spark said that VDSL is available. They said I should get faster speed of up to 15 times than ADSL. That sounded so good, I almost cried on the phone.

Now if that is not the case, If I can't get any faster speed on VDSL, this will be total waste of everyone's time. I will be so disappointed from the entire process by Spark.

Well you can get VDSL but the speed is going to be pi$$ poor cause of the long run of copper

Forget that - it looks like all of Edwards should be fed from a cabinet HSN/CN on Rathgar Rd near Ti Nana. The whole of Edwards shows as ADSL (>10Mb). That 45dB attenuation is the killer though - as you say, the Chorus address checker is showing ADSL connections under 4Mb for several properties, which is pretty low. @coffeebaron or @hio77 may have some idea if this is a problem for that area.

EDIT: Follow up with your ISP regarding progress on fibre, particularly if all parties have given consent. It may just be a miscommunication somewhere that can be resolved and the process kicked off quickly again.

As others have pointed out you're not in a VDSL2 coverage area and based upon looking at Chorus data and your sync rate I'd pick you're around 2km from the exchange, well beyond the limit for VDSL2.

You either need to move back to ADSL2+, or simply get UFB installed which has been available at your location since early 2016.

Same situation here, there's quite a few properties that Chorus state are 3-5Mbps and are bang smack in the middle of a VDSL zone. If I get a sync at 14.5Mbps and fail, what hope does someone with even 5Mbps have?

That's not the same situation. The OP is not in a VDSL zone, you are. That aside, you can easily get properties in a VDSL zone that are going to have poor sync rates, usually (but not always) due to internal wiring at the particular premises.

not at all

you had a prequal done and that came back as negative. it doesnt look like a prequal was done on the OP's line nor if anyone checked they were even in a VDSL zone

That exact part of Henderson I'm not up with off the top of my head however will check it out when I get home.

Suspect what the others have said is correct here though.

@cynnicallemon more is at play than just a sync rate, reread many of the comments in your thread for a means to try, cherry picking situations such as the OPs is not directly relateable unfortunately..

okay totally forgot to come back to this one once i got home from work!

Edwards ave, literally a deadspot for vdsl edge case too sadly.

your line attenuation however is not healthy unless the loop is way off, flick me a DM with your address and ill give it more of a detailed check.

if your lucky, i may be curious as to what has gone so horribly wrong to land at 45dB there..
