Why am I receiving text messages from an organisation I have never signed up for? I've contacted their support number to lay a complaint why why am I receiving messages from those numbers?

Usual reasons

  • Previous user of the number had subscribed to them, and you have their number now.
  • Some moron filling something in doesn't know their own number.
  • Someone entering data from a paper form mis-typed or couldnt read someones writing properly.

Those numbers are pool numbers from your Telco, used to send out bulk text messages. The sending company name should be at the beginning of the message, and you should also be able to reply to each message with the word STOP . All texting companies are required to remove you from that Companies text list, and not send you anymore.

Annoyingly though, you have to pay for the stop message even though you didn't have anything to do with the message.

Also - they don't always work. I've sent stop, however, the messages have still continued.

Yeah, having to pay to unsubscribe is a problem, but I am not sure how we could get around it in NZ. All shortcode numbers like these are considered "premium" numbers, so you pay to reply to them (Even if you have bulk texting packs or unlimited texting).

The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 talks about having an unsubscribe facility, which it looks like this company are not using.

I am a director of a bulk texting company, and ALL of our clients have this functionality built into their account. If an end user replies STOP to a message, we will then block all further attempts to send SMS messages from our client to the end user.

There are shady (cheap, possibly off-shore) companies who don't follow the rules and laws of NZ.

If you contact the sending company (By phone), and they fail to remove you from their list, then I would suggest contacting the DIA's Electronic Messaging Compliance Unit... (info@antispam.govt.nz)

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Contacted Wallet Wizard again on Monday about still receiving these unsolicited messages. They said they would stop them within 24 hours. I Just received another one so tonight I will be contacting  DIA's Electronic Messaging Compliance Unit to make a complaint.

Hopefully that will stop them.

Received a response from Internal Affairs today basically telling me to forward the text message to 7726 and the complaint will be lodged in their database and an investigator with the department may investigate further. They then went on about if the SMS messages appeared to be a spam you should not enter into correspondence with the sender of the message.

In my email complaint to them I included that fact the I had tried multiple times to get them to stop, the screen shot I included above showing that they were not honouring the stop command as well as the fact that they were sending multiple sms messages to me (8 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday and 7 so far on Thursday). The wording of their reply doesn't inspire me with confidence that anything will be done.

The last message I received from Wallet Wizard was last Friday so at least they have stopped for now.
