I'm trying to get my mum's internet sorted out and I'm following the instructions on:

https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet-email/getstarted/imap-settings-for-yahoo-xtra-accounts/

And the sending server keeps in timing out. Port 465 and 587 both fail either when using SSL or TLS but if I use the yahoo server domain setting then everything works. Anyone can give an insight on what is happening with send.xtra.co.nz being very broken.

Sign up for a free account and forget this Spark nonsense. I can't believe anyone still uses that clusterfunk of a mail service.

In a perfect world mum would be using GMail but unfortunately she insists on using Xtra so here I am.

Has she given permission for her account to be migrated?

Yes she has.

The IMAP server works (imap.xtra.co.nz) but the sending one doesn't (send.xtra.co.nz), the issue is with send.xtra.co.nz timing out.

Spark are having problems again with with their yahoo provider when sending emails. It is causing a pop up login box to occur. I have had this problem reoccur today

I have 5 xtra email addresses (1 master & 4 sub-accounts) and after giving permission last week as well changing my passwords, it all turned to s**t yesterday evening with the send.xtra.co.nz side of things.

Did discover after a couple of hours that the username in the smtp settings is just joebloggs and not joebloggs@xtra.co.nz as it has been in the past.

So was able to get 4 of the 5 accounts sending & receiving. Number 5 just would not work. So went drastic and signed into my master yahoo web account and deleted this sub- account. Then opened up a different new sub-account which worked so long as it remained an imap account.

Note I am using Apple Mail 10.7. All of my xtra accounts are pop3 accounts for which I have had no problems in the past converting to from imap protocols. But since activating this new yahoo/xtra imap account and coverting it to pop3 protocol yahoo/xtra refuses to acknowledge it. Convert back to imap and all is well.

This problem persists on my iPad2 iOS 9.3.5 and my iPhone 7 iOS 10.1

So come on xtra @ Spark whats the deal?

It is intermittent. I have clients who have the same problem now and again. It is probably one of the reasons they are moving email providers. But I just wish they would own the problem with an announcement.

Just had an online chat with Spark helpdesk:

In regards to the send issue:

[12:57] Lillian: Ah hmmm.. yes unfortunately there is a current outage regarding emails not being able to send through.

In regards to the smtp username issue: (I suggested they be more proactive in their setup advice and perhaps send out a bulk email addendum to the change of password email regarding checking/changing the smtp username.)

[13:02] Lillian: I understand :) Thanks for that, I will send through the feedback to the team. We will work on that. I'm sure many customers may have thought of the same thing so I will get them to look into it :)

In regards to my pop3 issue: (see above post)

[13:04] Lillian: Yes, so I will need to follow that up as there were others who were having the same issue. What is the best number to contact you on?

Interesting no less

Do what you would do if she dropped her phone in the toilet and get her a new one. At this point the e-mail system is broken and there appears to be zero Spark support/care so it might as well be in the toilet. You'll save yourself endless headaches by using a provider that can actually provide a service.
