(asked on reddit and got directed to post this here)

I'm not sure what to do to fix it since the results are so inconsistent, but basically I'm getting roughly 2mbps when I'm paying for 40, and every time I attempt to do something bigger than loading a webpage (ie load a youtube video, download a steam game, internet speed test, etc.) my DSL and wifi crash throughout the whole household. Sometimes connecting my ethernet to a different port to the one it's in works and sometimes a simple restart works, but lately there has been nothing that will fix it.

The stupidest thing is, it only happens with my desktop pc, every other device I have (phone and laptop) have no issues and have not once been the cause of a crash. I've already contacted spark about this twice, and they cant seem to fix it, maybe someone here can give me some advice.

Cheers in advance.

1) - Have you got the latest firmware? https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet-data/equipment/huawei/hg630b-gateway/updating-your-huawei-hg630b-gateway/

2) What do you mean you are paying for 40Mb/s and only getting 2? I guess you are on VDSL - can you please post the VDSL line stats from the modem. You should be able to get this from the status pages on the modem - should list attenuation, noise margin, sync rate etc.

Definitely check your firmware.

there is no flat '40mbit' plan, as @RunningMan has asked.. are you on VDSL? If so stats?

can you confirm you get normal speeds on other devices?

Sounds like you have narrowed down the problem to be only when your Desktop is connected? That would be a quick indicator to me, that your Desktop could be infected with something - In this case i would suspect a rouge attack that is fulling your modems State table.

Any more details you can provide about what happens when your desktop is connected?

You have answered your own question. Its not about the modem as you have proved.

Spark are apparently inundated with Windows 10 connectivity problems due to some kind of dns issue since Tuesday or Wednesday last week .. not sure which modems this applies to, but changing the dns to manual 8.8.8.8 helps in those cases .. this may be a separate topic, but then again it may not.

Antivirus or malware are also obvious possibilities affecting throughput in this case where it is just one device going slow.

Just realised, my previous post was only semicorrect.

I thought you were refering to the DNS issue that was with one of the older modems, However your referring to the Windows 10 update issue (Not realated to the router at all)

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=45&topicid=206143

More about that issue in the above thread.

Unless you fully understand the consequences Google DNS should never be used long term on a general day to day machine for anything other than testing. If it's just a device that requires DNS lookups then it's fine, but for general day to day browsing and video it can still lead to a significant performance hit.
