Is anyone else is experiencing 'network' issues with BigPipe ADSL boardband this weekend? Since sometime on Friday some web pages time out when trying to load, but then others load fine. For example I can get to nzherald.co.nz and youtube.com fine, but facebook.com, theregister.co.uk, and stuff.co.nz all time out (this is consistent - if site works it has worked all weekend). I also find if I try to trace route to these sites: for working sites it works and for the non-accessible sites it gets as far as:

>tracert www.facebook.com
Tracing route to star-mini.c10r.facebook.com [157.240.8.35]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  NB604N.Home [192.168.1.1]
  2    17 ms    17 ms    19 ms  210.54.39.1
  3    17 ms    17 ms    16 ms  122.56.60.68
  4    18 ms    17 ms    19 ms  122.56.60.69
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out

....and continues on like that it gives up at 30 hops of time outs (the last hop is always: 122.56.60.69)

I've gone through the usual rebooting the router and devices. And I've also confirmed it's happening on multiple devices (Win10, iPhone, Linux).

So I've raised a ticket with BigPipe are have acknowledged it, they came back to me pretty quickly to say they have changed sometimes and could i restart the modem - still no go.

Looking at the symptoms it appears to be fault not on my equipment but somewhere on BigPipes network - however I've not seen any news of a bigger outage (ie other people complaining of the same issue).

But I ask here in case anyone can give any further suggestions of troubleshooting I can do at my end that bit pick up the problem? - Because as I'm not seeing other people complain about this I'm still wondering have I missed something, is it me?!

(oh and before any asks - I'm in Wellington, so I don't think this would be a follow on from the Chch incident yesterday)

Cheers

Eddie

On UFB it is totally fine for me. This looks like it may be MTU issues on your side. What kind of router are you using and what have you got your MTU set to?

What's your MTU and what DNS servers are you using?

Router: NetComm Wireless NB604N
The MTU set for the WAN connection is the router is 1492 (which according to the ping tes,t force the packet not to be fragmented and fiddle with the size until it's not method is correct for my connection)
DNS:
Primary DNS Server:     203.96.123.1
Secondary DNS Server:     203.96.123.2

Do you have any security software on your PC? Can other devices access the internet or is it just a single device?

I assume Bigpipe's parental control / prioritisation has been set to off?

It doesn't look like a MTU or DNS issue to me, that traceroute should really be travelling further out than those hops shown.

Well that's interesting - it's all just started working (in the last 5 minutes).

I don't think it was computer security software as I've tried it from an Win10 computer (with Windows Defender), an iPhone 6 (iOS 10) and a very basic linux install on old laptop - all getting the same symptoms.

However I was fiddling around in the router and disabled it's built in firewall, then rebooted the router: still not working. I then re-enabled the firewall and suddenly everything started working again.

I think this is just coincidence though because when i do a trace route to Facebook.com I get (completely different route from my first post):

C:\Users\eddie>tracert www.facebook.com

Tracing route to star-mini.c10r.facebook.com [157.240.8.35]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  NB604N.Home [192.168.1.1]
  2    17 ms    17 ms    20 ms  100.64.0.1
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6    18 ms    17 ms    18 ms  ae11-201.akbr6.global-gateway.net.nz [122.56.118.145]
  7    18 ms    19 ms    17 ms  ae2-6.tkbr12.global-gateway.net.nz [122.56.127.17]
  8    41 ms    40 ms    40 ms  xe1-0-2.sebr3.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.232.114]
  9    41 ms    41 ms    41 ms  ae5-10.sebr4.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.232.242]
 10    41 ms    41 ms    41 ms  122.56.119.6
 11    41 ms    42 ms    40 ms  po104.psw01b.syd2.tfbnw.net [31.13.30.25]
 12    41 ms    42 ms    42 ms  173.252.67.57
 13    43 ms    41 ms    41 ms  star-mini.c10r.facebook.com [157.240.8.35]

Trace complete.

And I also now notice my external IP address has changed (it's meant to be static). So I await to here back from BigPipe support...

yitz: I assume Bigpipe's parental control / prioritisation has been set to off?

I've never turned them on so I assume they are still off.

Update to my previous post: Big Pipe support just emailed me to advice that they haveremoved my static IP for troubleshooting purposes - so maybe it is a network routing issue as BigPipe's end.
