Hello,

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have ADSL and the moment, but I am only seeing speeds of less than 2 Mbps.  This is a little slow and frustrating now days.

My home is a 1900s villa,  the copper line comes from the power pole outside my gate, into the ceiling, travels approximately 7.5 meters to the green thingy on the wall straight to a phone jack.  My Spark HG630b Home Gateway plugs directly into that.  I don't use a filter as I have no phone service connected, and removing the filter saw a slight improvement in speed.

If I were to upgrade to VDSL would I see an improvement in speed, or am I constrained my physical line?

Is there anything I could do to get better speeds from my equipment?

Thanks

Bryan

Depends, how far you are from the cabinet/exchange

go here: https://www.chorus.co.nz/speed-dial

then check your neighbours addresses and see if any have VDSL and what their speeds are.

You would want to get a master filter installed and have the wiring in your house tidied up when you got it installed to maximise the connection

If you only get 2Mbps on ADSL you probably can't get VDSL at all.

Put your address in chorus.co.nz and tell us what you see?

What do you use the internet for?

How much data do you require?

Another option might be a fixed wireless product like Skinny Broadband, or Spark's alternative. It might give you VDSL type speeds depending on where you are and if the product is available there.

If you're a gamer, it might not be the best fit for you, because latency is worse than xdsl (but not terrible).

As above, check the chorus page, see what it says you can get.

Post your line stats, and we can comment further otherwise.

UFB available? If so I wouldn't bother with VDSL.

Hi, and thank you for your replies.

The Chorus site tells me that I can get vdsl and that I currently only have up to 1 Mbps( so I guess I'm not doing too bad)

None of my neighbors show up on the Chorus site.

As per what we use it for, we mainly stream Lightbox, Netflix, Youtube and the like.  No gaming.

Available at my address is meant to be adsl, vdsl. and wireless according to spark.

Wireless won't work due to our data usage.

keep working both ways down your street, and on both sides and see what others are getting be it ADSL or VDSL, if your connectio differs vastly from those on ADSL the you have an issue.

if you want to give us a general indication on where you live, ie between number 22 and 32 on xys street we can give you an indication on aprioximatly how far you are from the serving device so can give you a broad speed range. but i suspect you have a fault

Can you post your connection stats? should be in one of the menus in the router/modem

sounds likely that your line simply has a issue on it if VDSL is avaible or the shapemap is incorrect (rare but possible)

Please post your DSL stats from your Modem.

If you cant do this, call spark jump in the BB queue and ask them to do a Prequal for vdsl for your line. Queues for residentual are very short currently.

Apart from most likely having a fault in house wiring. If you are indeed in a VDSL area then you would be expecting a healthy adsl connection to deliver around 15+ Mbps down.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

That indicates a wiring issue, this can either be inside or outside your house. If the problem is inside you will need to fix it, if it's outside, log a fault with Spark to get Chorus to fix it.

Does the Chorus site tell you when/if you're getting fibre?

Hi

I live on Dulcie St in Paeroa.

I can't seem to access the modem to get any stats.  The default password isn't working. :(

Will reset the modem and try again.

Thanks

admin/admin is default in spark provided modems.

If that does not work, you must have changed them at some point. Reset will change this back to default but it could also leave you without conectivity if you are using a third party modem.

Just looking at the Chorus maps (only a few houses on Dulcie St) it seems you may have a wiring issue.

You'll need a master filter - either $200 from Chorus or if @coffeebaron is around in the area he may be able to install one for you. Just ask Spark.

looked about the same for me.

agreed, a master filter installation will likely be best move, @coffeebaron will do it cheaper than spark.

BB Faults is very quiet today so i would get in there while you can with ease.
