Looking at Skinny website this morning and noticed they have unlimited (fixed line) broadband available for $68 per month with no contract.

Is this new to Skinny or did I miss it when I looked on their website last week?

I signed up for the Skinny Wireless Broadband service, but I also have an Unlimited ADSL connection with BigPipe for $79 P/M which I intended on keeping, would happily switch to Skinny for that also (assuming their system allows me to have two broadband services).

Weird, one Spark company doing unlimited for $79/month. Another Spark company doing it for $68/month.

What is the difference? Why stay with Bigpipe?

On Bigpipe you can get static IP and the Bigpipe App, also you can BYO modem.

Yeah, was wondering about the Static IP. I'd assume Skinny is all CG-NAT and no way to get off that. I also wonder if you are stuck with their modem (or can you BYO)? But, for $11 less per month, it will suit a lot of people.

seems like a desperate response to the likes of the trustpower deal that is still happening, despite comcom intervention.

Jason Paris last year said that sort of contract pricing (first year cheap, 2nd year expensive) was very 'anti-customer'. Now he goes and launches basically the same thing?

But the real question is:

why bother doing this, when they could just do the exact same thing with Bigpipe? Launching an entirely new broadband brand is a lot more work (time+$$) than simply making a price change on an existing one. Is spark trying to become the unilever of telcos?

Question: is this using spark broadband network? Bigpipe broadband network? or another brand new set of gear?

$68 for VDSL & UFB (you get the 'best technology available at your address') is pretty damn close to the point where you just lose money on every connection. Competitors may start to complain about predatory pricing.

$68 less GST is ~$60.

Chorus cost is ~$40. then add on your international bandwidth (for unlimited connections on VDSL and UFB this is going to be at least $10) and other backhaul costs and you're already talking over $50, probably over $55. Which leaves a miserly $5 to cover all your other overheads.

If Bigpipe, cutting out all the costs it can, prices VDSL at $89, how the hell can skinny get it down to $68, a full $20 lower without making a loss? Comcom might well see a few complaints from other telcos about this pricing.

Actually just saw that, if I can't use my own modem, I'll stick with BigPipe.

"Fastest connection ADSL < VDSL < UFB" ... well clearly that's just like Bigpipe's "UFB where we have a handover" because they're telling me VDSL and I've had UFB since 2013 (Whanganui).

I guess they're competing with Flip at those prices.
