New customer to BigPipe here in Christchurch,
I'm getting rather high latency than what i would've expected from a new UFB line.

Win10 PC -> Unifi USG (gateway) -> echolife hg8240h (ONT) -> BigPipe UFB 100/20

From what i can tell the latency is being added solely from the ONT (echolife hg8240h)
I have tried taking the USG out of the picture and going Win10 -> echolife hg8240h (ONT) with extract same results

What sort of latency should i be expecting for my connection? & do you agree it is the ONT adding the latency or is there something else i am missing here?

That 20 ms is to your ISP, not to the ONT. The ONT doesn't show up in the trace as it is just a glorified plug adapter.

Hop #2 is not your ONT, it will be on Bigpipe's BNG (big router that terminates many broadband connections to the Internet) and that is in Auckland.

20 ms is a typical round trip time between Christchurch and Auckland.

Are you having issues with latency for games or other applications?

All chch bigpipe traffic goes via auckland.

Other ISPs don't send traffic via Auckland from Christchurch adding the latency,

Any testing should be done using Bigpipe DNS

Ahh yep that makes sense,

Previous ISP must've had DNS servers in Christchurch that made the new connection look comparably slower.

An ONT doesn't add latency. It's a layer2 bridge.

What exactly do you think is wrong with your connection? Those tests show a perfectly normal connection and latency is obviously going to depend on where you're testing to so you need to define "high latency".

Curious, Do people find all BigPipe traffic from Christchurch via Auckland an issue? It means you can't get any less than 20 ping to anywhere, But as most data centres would be in Auckland or overseas I guess it's not much of an issue.

(Okay, I tell a lie, my best ping is in the speediest result below, 16ms to Hamilton)

Was previously on Bigpipe UFB in Christchurch, moved to a house that didn't have fibre, but fibre is just about to go live here and thinking of ISP options: Skinny (essentially the same as BigPipe), BigPipe, Spark)

I'd go Spark anyday @Yabanize except don't want to pay another $15 for a static IP address on an already more expensive connection, hence haven't moved yet. If Static IP doesn't matter then Spark is a good option. They seem to have a better and more resilient network architecture.
