Hi all.

This used to work but no longer.

Never use xtra email myself but did have this set up to email system notifications to my gmail address.

Sunday afternoon thing to see if I can get it going again....

Do I need to get my xtra email sorted to do this - pretty sure it got locked at some stage, and now they have the email migration going on.

Was using my xxxx@xtra.co.nz, on port 465, with SMTP of send.xtra.co.nz

Wondered if there was a way to this using my gmail address possibly as an alternative?

Why bother? Just head over to SMTP2GO, create a free account and use that on your NAS rather than mess around with xtra.

Gmail would be another option too but you would need to disable 2FA to make it work. SMTP2GO is just no hassles and works exceptionally well.

Or just use GMAIL as a SMTP server if you are going to use it to receive the notifications anyway.

You make application passwords for things like this with gmail when you have 2 factor enabled.

Annoying thing I find is you cant go in and view them later, or limit what the passwords can do, only delete them and recreate them. It would be a lot more reliable than using xtras server.

And yes, you can email yourself thru gmails smtp, better still email youraddress+somethingelse@gmail so that they can be filtered easier.

Although to be honest, they may have restricted the free account big time. I've used their paid service for ages so not sure what you get for free. Used to be a couple of thousand emails though.

Yeah - Gmail is interesting - wants me to loosen the security to accept emails from my NAS box. I probably won't, I see other NAS devices have similar issues (mine is an old DNS-320)

Not that the notifications re critical but was kind of a cool feature.

I would be sending like two a week or something - SMTP2GO looks like for a business user a bit...

I don't understand what's the security issue? You can create a password for that device only, configure SMTP using the gmail address, your username and that new password. What's the problem here?

That same password can also be used to get into read emails, and use any other app that doesnt do 2 factor with gmail. You cant make a password that can only send emails.

If you don't trust the NAS then you shouldn't have your files stored there...

I had the same issue With outlook 2010 (on Win7). Couldnt smtp via gmail unless I loosened the security (in the Gmail a/c) .

You don't have to losen security. If you have 2FA enabled you can just generate an application password and use it for that specific app/program.

Ok - thanks - all sorted.

I trust my NAS - mostly. Pretty sure its viewable only on my side of the firewall - not accessible from the internet.
