I moved from Orcon ADSL to Bigpipe fibre (200/20) in December and things have been going well except for streaming from the iTunes movie store with my Apple TV (3rd gen).

I have the Apple TV settings set to stream full 1080p quality movies/trailers, but streaming now takes forever to load and I always get 'maybe try switching to 720p in the Settings' message after I have bought or rented a movie.

I have restarted, and reset, the Apple TV multiple times.

This problem honestly never happened when I was with Orcon on ADSL. Movies and trailers would start immediately. They would sometimes pause, albeit very briefly, while it was caching, but now it's 5x worse.

I have been in contact with Bigpipe and after conducting a speedtest for them and sending them the results, their say they can't do much, which I can understand.

However, I am wondering if anyone else is having this issue, or seen or heard of others who have?

FWIW, I have a Huawei HG659 connected to the ONT, and the Apple TV is connected to it via ethernet.

I have the iOS Bigpipe app but nothing makes a difference (prioritising streaming, resetting all settings etc.)

Yep, I'm on BigPipe. I have no end of trouble with streaming to apple TV... steaming 4K on youtube or Netflix is fine .

changing the DNS on the Apple TV to 8.8.8.8 appears to have helped considerably, thanks!

What does this mean w/r/t to bigpipes DNS servers??

Roger, most ISPs don't really put in much effort/funding into building/maintaining their DNS servers as it's not their core business, thus often other DNS services like Googles or OpenDNS are better maintained and able to handle DDOS attacks, or just heavy load etc.

Remember that Google doesn't have any DNS servers in NZ or Australia, the closest is in Singapore from what I can tell.

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/faq#locations

However it doesn't mean all sites will be slow, as Google mentions in the CDN section, some CDNs have implemented a technique to still use the closest server to you, namely the Akamai CDN supports it, which I believe Apple use.

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/faq#cdn

As a side note, I would recommend trying OpenDNS if you experience slow sites, as they have a server in Australia.

Just a heads up.

Yeah I'm not sure BigPipe have great support for Akamai.

Apple updates also feel slow on BigPipe, but that may be because they're uniquely signed per device and have to do an origin pull. Suspect 2degrees run their own Apple update server or something as I'm sure it used to be faster there.

EDIT: Having said that - I've never really had any issues with TV/movies from iTunes on Apple TV, although only purchasing/renting SD not HD content.

Google must run DNS in Sydney as pinging 8.8.8.8 is a 35ms ping from Christchurch; although it may just be proxying requests from Sydney through to an authoritative server in Singapore perhaps seeing there isn't anything from Australia showing on that list.

https://peering.google.com/#/infrastructure is a fun page too

Apple used to use Akamai for all their updates, but transitioned away for a lot of them around 18 months (?) ago, with a lot coming directly from Apple's servers instead.
