Hi,

So I've recently joined Bigpipe and tried to open some ports from router but noticed it wouldn't work, then I read about how Bigpipe share public IP's for users using CGNAT etc so you need to request a static IP if you want to open port.

I don't plan on asking for static IP so I"m just wondering how bigpipe handles open ports for basic services like gaming services (like xbox live etc) because I remembered I had to open those types of services previously. Do they just open ports for all common services for everyone? Also do they have a list of dedicated open ports to use, for example I'm trying to setup my torrent application but I'm not sure what port I use since any ports I add to my router don't work.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Anand

As you've already found out, there is additional layer of NAT in place. Effectively, there are no ports to open - to whom would they point them if they did?

If you want to do this, your only option is a public IP address - either pay for a static, or if you really think you can get it going over IPv6, then ask for that...

If you want to open ports you will need a static IP.

If you don't have a static IP you can't open ports.

Just understand you need to know what you're doing when it comes with the IPv6 beta at the moment - it is beta for a reason. Just pay the $49 once-off for a static IP if you need it. You'll still be able to game totally fine over CGNAT and I've got some friends who are avid gamers who are still on a CGNAT connection because you honestly don't need it.

If you're thinking you need an "open NAT" then you're doing it wrong.

This is basically a reiteration of what @michaelmurphy said, but: CGNAT will prevent you from fiddling around with opening ports. If you want to do that, grab a static IP from us. At $45 for the lifetime of your connection this is cheap as chips. That being said, for your run-of-the-mill online gaming you simply don't need one. I was having a blast on PUBG last night, and I'm regularly on PSN without the slightest trouble, and I don't currently have a static IP.

Edit: corrected "GCNAT" to "CGNAT." Lol.

No external IP is good, means kids cant DDOS you playing Call of Duty tongue-out (Very common threat to be had in a multiplayer game)

I'm trying to open up a port so I can access my plex server anywhere. Will I need to purchase a static ip for my bigpipe connection?

I just paid the one time fee and I was happy, most ISPs charge you an ongoing fee, but with BigPipe you pay once and keep it forever.  I think that's awesome.

Unless you're happy accessing it via IPv6 only (hint: you're not), then yes - you'll need a static IP.
