Hi Bigpipe and fellow Geekzoners.

I have just moved to Bigpipe from 2 Degrees and finding the performance of Bigpipe a bit disappointing when compared to 2 Degrees performance. The same internet behavior is seeing buffering and lower quality streams when compared to 2 Degrees on the same sites.

I just want to make sure that I have set up the Fritzbox correctly. All I did was untick Vlan tagging and left all the other settings the same. Is there something else I need to change?

I've just switched from 2 Degrees to Big Pipe, using a 7490 as well, and I'm having an interesting experience here.

Now I used to have a pretty good VDSL connection with Snap/2 Degrees (considering distance and all that) of 32 Mb/s download and 2.5 Mb/s upload, after getting a master filter installed through Chorus
. Life was sweet for half a year. Great snappy internet and HD streaming, etc.

Then my VDSL connection was all over the show, down to 16 Mb/s download and 200 kb/s upload and very unstable too. (Forget watching YouTube, Netflix, etc.). Eventually it ended up as 26 Mb/s download and, on a good day, 900 kb/s upload. HD streaming... not so much. 2 Degrees did bugger all, pretty much telling me that I had a working connection and that was it.

So I switched to Big Pipe, and my connection speed on the 7490 jumped instantly back to 32 Mb/s and 1.6 Mb/s .. so yay? I mean, it all works fine for me. YouTube works. Netflix works.

However, my wife - who is using a VPN to Europe to watch foreign language content - complains that our internet is way worse than it was before? I tried to explain that by the numbers on the router, we should have a much better connection now but that's getting me nowhere.

Is it at all possible that somehow we would get a better connection with 2 Degrees despite a slower sync rate on the modem? Surely not I'd think? Is Big Pipe otherwise throttling VPN connections perhaps? I have no idea.

You are looking at two things here.

The numbers in the modem interface shows the speed between the modem in your house and the DSLAM in your neighbourhood. That's it. It does not tell you how good your internet connection will be. This speed has nothing to do with your ISP. Rather it's due to your modem, the quality of the wires, interference from other electronic sources, what Chorus is doing, etc.

The speed you get to international sites depends on the connection between your ISP's servers, and the wider internet. This is the part where your choice of ISP matters. 2d is known for having good connections to the wider internet.

So the answer to your question is yes, it is very possible.

I got in touch with BigPipe Support, they got me to do a wired speed test to the Auckland Spark server connected to the Frtizbox and directly to the ONT, speedtests came back as normal for 100/20 connection and they suggested that I upgrade to a higher speed plan....

I guess I will see how the performance goes.

That's certainly true but when you have a rubbish connection to your DSLAM, then any ISP performance after that becomes irrelevant? I've always considered my issue with my connection to be a Chorus problem but I was expecting 2 Degrees to prompt Chorus to do something about it. After all, that's who I'm paying anyway?

So after having my connection settle overnight after Big Pipe activated things at their end, I went from 32 Mb/s down and 1.6 Mb/s up to 30 Mb/s down and (wait for it) 4.5 Mb/s up. That's also exactly as per what the Chorus tech said I should have been getting when they came around to install my master filter. (He measured 32 Mb/s down and 5 Mb/s upload at the filter connection point.)

I don't think that Big Pipe has anything to do with it, but I think me shifting to another ISP prompted Chorus to change something which corrected my DSLAM connection, seeing as I was only getting 26 Mb/s down and 900 Kb/s up before with 2 Degrees?

This really is all voodoo magic to me though.

@erik, you should probably start a new thread, as you have a different issue to the OP. The VDSL sync rate changes you are seeing are more likely to be related to DLM changes Chorus have been rolling out recently.

@darkasdes2, unticking the VLAN option and having the correct username/password should be all that is required.

If you had manually entered DNS servers either on your router, or on devices, then this can cause poor performance for sites that use CDNs, particularly if you move ISP. Make sure you have entered Bigpipe's DNS servers unless you have a specific need otherwise, and understand the implications.

I have ticked the option that allows the Friztbox to automatically detect the DNS servers. I will see how things go, otherwise I will manually enter the BigPipe DNS servers.

As long as your devices are then picking up the same DNS servers by DHCP (no manual entries) then that should be all you need to do.

I'm watching this thread with great interest as I too have just decided as at today to switch from 2Degrees to Bigpipe.

I'm in Auckland CBD, and have opted for their Elite plan with Static IP. I'll be using a Fritz 7490, too.

Are you able to disclose what your existing settings are. Obviously without user/pw entries.
