I got a press release yesterday saying that Telecom NZ has signed Brightstar to distribute mobile, services. This also confirms the network launch for November 2008

TELECOM ANNOUNCES SUPPLIER PARTNERSHIP WITH BRIGHTSTAR CORP

In the lead up to the launch of its new mobile network in November Telecom New Zealand announced today an agreement with Brightstar Corp. to deliver Telecom's mobile devices, supply chain services and improved business intelligence.

Brightstar Corp., headquartered in Miami, is one of the largest wireless device distribution, logistics and supply chain solutions companies globally.

In addition to preparing for the launch of its new mobile network later this year, this agreement reflects Telecoms desire to enhance its supply chain to maximise choice, access and speed in bringing new products to customers.

Brightstar will now be Telecom's partner of choice for supply chain services. The new relationship will be phased in over the next six months and is expected to be up and running prior to the new network launch in November.

Initially the five year agreement will involve supply of mobile phones as well as services like warehouse operations, product lifecycle management, detailed reporting and stock management.

Has there been any whsipers about devices being locked?

It'll be great for the 2 operators to have to race each other to get high demand devices to market, Vodafone's current "lets take 6 months to add our logs to the firmware" tactics are frustrating

I had a quick look at their website, handset wise it looks like we can expect to see the same brands vodafone offers plus some which will be good. But yeah I hope they don't do software locking to prevent people just changing the simcard instead of having to have 2 phones

Don't Telecom already lock their Worldmode phones? I.E. I don't think you can drop a Vodafone SIM into one of these. So what does that say about the likelihood of locking phones for their upcoming GSM/UMTS network too?

Yes, Worldmode handsets are locked to Telecom SIM Cards for roaming only. AFAIK, Telecom have not made the call to lock or not to lock their native GSM EDGE / WCDMA phones.

I would guess we will find out more closer to launch.
