I have this model Technicolor TG589vn v2 - and the Access controls used to work.  Where you set the wifi to go off at certain times.

For some reason, it is not working anymore.  I need to turn wifi off for certain devices - children - well teenagers to stop them having wifi access in the middle of the night.

Has anyone had this issue with the model and resolved it?   At the moment I am having to physically disconnect modem and bring into my bedroom (sneaky boys have gone downstairs stealthy while I sleep and turned it back on) - which means I have no wifi (probably a good thing to have early night's myself though lol, but means no netflix before sleeping)

Also, which modems would people recommend that do this and also allow you to alter dns settings/routes etc, which I need.

Look forward to your replies.

Why not look at something like a UniFi AC Lite to connect to the TG589 for WiFi?

if it was working previously and now stopped it would point to modem issue, i alway make a point of backing up my config once i have the modem tweaked to my liking, often i find small things change or drop off. I suggest hardware reset the modem, reconfigure it fresh, test and then back up. If that fails check for a firmware update or as michaelmurfy suggests disable the wifi on the modem and add a inifi access point, i don't know if i would go for a lite as i would take the opportunity to improve wifi performance at the same time, if your budget allows go for a ceiling mounted UAP series, choose from standard, long range or pro. They are brilliant.

We use a FritzBox 7390 and it has excellent parental controls. You can setup different profiles and apply them to particular devices. For example, for my two boys I set their WiFi access to end at 8pm and begin again at 7am. The profile applies to their devices and not mine. You can also set a maximum number of minutes or hours of use per day as well as the time restrictions, and can setup blacklists of sites you don't want them to visit. You can then also print out 'tickets', so that if they've been good and you want to reward them with some additional WiFi time, you give them a printed ticket, they type it into their browser and it gives them an extra 45 minutes.

DNS settings and routes are also fully configurable.

Got mine from Snap (now 2Degrees) when I connected, but have since moved to Spark and continuing to use it and will do so until its last breath! You can often find them on TradeMe.

Good luck!

Some of the Asus products have built in controls which seem to fit with what you are after.
AiProtection - Parental Controls

I haven't used the controls but do have the router only version of the AC-68U and it has served me well the last 3.5 years. Previously had the AC-66u.
I'm only now moving off the 68U (going to Ubiquiti Edgerouter/Unifi WiFi) as I have way too many devices/connections for it to handle and the poor thing is overloaded.

The Asus xDSL range seems to stop at the at the 68u model and doesn't include any of the newer router only models.
xDSL Models
WiFi Router only

As per others recommendations the Asus products also do the DNS and static routes that you would be looking for.

If it was me and I went with an Asus product I would probably get at least a 68u or more WiFi router only and connect to the Technicolor in bridge mode.
I've never used a Technicolor but this older post seems to suggest it can be done - you would need to check your model/firmware first.

Reasons I would go with a Technicolor-bridge-Asus setup are (points are not restricted to only Asus products);
* Can get a better wifi router only version than the xDSL models.
* The router only versions have some excellent third party firmware that add some features if you are so inclined.
* It simplifies what each device is doing and they generally perform better - this is similar to michaelmurfy's suggestion (Technicolor modem/router + wifi device)
* If you plan on using router based VPN connections rather than DNS solutions for unblocking streaming content then a better router/cpu is recommended and is easier to do/find with WiFi router only models.

Sounds like you need a end point protection tool like McAfee UTM or similar firewall inbetween your router and home network.

It's my view it's a more effective way to teach them about digital citizenship and when they mess with you they loose the interwebs for the week as the password gets changed and network cables get removed. That's far more effective in my experience.

ASUS parental control is great, easy and works.
