High Packet loss on ADSL

I experience a) slow internet connection, b) intermittent drop outs, c) high packet loss.

Using Pingplotter, I find that the problem appears to be consistently within the Spark network.

While our line may not be the best, the problem is not between our modem and the exchange, it seems to be in the next hop.

The issue always appears at 122.56.116.6 mdr-ip24-int.msc.global-gateway.net.nz and I run with a long term packet loss at this step of around 75%

Any ideas??

Can you post line stats from your router please? Just to rule out any line issues.

MTR doesn't work the way you think it does - that 75% "packet loss" is perfectly normal. It's a core router that deprioritises ICMP which is perfectly normal behaviour. It does not indicate packet loss.

Looking at those results the first thing I'd be looking at would be whether you're saturating your ADSL upstream.

Looking at those results the first thing I'd be looking at would be whether you're saturating your ADSL upstream.

Correct. The giveaway here is that if there's genuine loss to an element on the path, then all elements further down the path will show similar or higher loss. In this case there are hops further afield that are fine, so there's no issue here.

824kbps upstream when you have good downstream of 22774 could indicate a wiring issue. Do you have a master filter installed? As above, very easy to saturate you upstream on ADSL too.

Yes, there is a master filter fitted at the point of entry.

It is an early filter so should I look at replacing it??

You could look at replacing filter. Also what is cable like from ETP to xDSL jack-point?

The wires from the filter go straight to the ADSL jack.

No, I have not looked at VDSL, no real need for more speed, just more stability, but if that would be a given, then I should look at it.

Fiber is heading this way and if they continue in this direction, it will be months rather than years, so no need to do anything very drastic.

The filter dates back to an early ADSL installation, I guess around 1999.

Based on the variation in latency there, I suspect saturation of upstream.
