Hey guys! So as you can see from the subject I have just gotten my fibre installed and running but the ping I'm getting is not great. So I live in Rangiora and I get 21 ms to Auckland and 46 To Sydney, but my friend who also lives in Rangiora just down the road is on 2degrees and he gets 30 ms to Sydney, not sure about his Auckland ping. I didn't know ISP's had this much of an affect on ping? Also why does Bigpipe's route go to Auckland first and not Christchurch? My friend who I mentioned above gets like 3 ms to Christchurch and I get 42 ms because I guess its going to Auckland then back to Chch. Also I'm only getting 90 megabits download where again my friend gets a solid 100+. I've tried 2 different routers but they both have the same results. So yeah just sorta not really that happy right now, not sure if anything can be done about it apart from switching providers, but I'm sure you guys will help me :)

I wouldn't have thought 30ms was physically possible from your location. 46 sounds about right.

Bigpipe route all traffic to their Auckland BNG. This has been discussed on here many times before.

If you can't get more than 90Mbps do you have a router and PC actually connected at Gigabit? You'll only get a maximum of 93Mbps on fast Ethernet.

You will not notice any difference in real life. It is only numbers, and your reaction time if you're a gamer is far far more than that.

@sbiddle is correct - Our core network is all based in Auckland. Any traffic leaving your router will make its way to Auckland before continuing on to its destination. He's also right that if there's a 100Mbps link somewhere in between you and us, you won't ever see the full 100Mbps on speed tests. You need gigabit all the way to see the full numbers.

Can you post some trace routes to the server you've noticed have higher than expected pings?

I'm with BigPipe now so I can't redo the speedtests but you can see the latency isn't what your mate is saying. If he's getting the ping from in game, it could be lower. For example in CS:GO I'll join a Sydney server @ 44ms but in game would display ~38ms.

The only time I noticed this being a problem was when I had to play on Melbourne hosted servers which sent the latency over 60ms and even though 5ms isn't much, it's still something. If this won't be a problem for you then stick with BigPipe, they're reliable and have a top quality support staff. Otherwise search for an ISP that has a point of presence in Christchurch. You could go with Slingshot if you don't want to go back to 2Degrees.

Interesting, I have been using and playing with the fibre for a few hours now and also with my friend and one thing I did notice about his ping is it fluctuates between 44 and 30 but always seems to go back to 44 but mine is consistent at 46, so that's good, I'd rather have consistent ping than fluctuation so I'm happy now haha thanks guys!

Why wouldn't you take a more optimal path? So if I connect to my neighbour 20 meters away, it would hairpin to Auckland and comes back down.

The internet is strange like that... I think BigPipe were looking at having local PoP's a few moons ago. Not sure what happened, but 20ms is nothing to be worried about.

Bigpipe are a low cost RSP. They can keep costs low by not having local POP's and peering.

For 99% of people their setup would result in absolutely no noticeable impact - if you're in that 1% that are concerned by it then you should look at for a more appropiate provider.

Because they would have to buy more stuff and provision more links for something that will never affect almost all of their customers. Connections between users is rare too, since CGNAT breaks that for most things that dont start to do UDP trickerry with STUN mappings etc.
