Cell sites down due to power outages 2017-07-14

Spark currently has 13 cell sites down in the central and lower North Island due to power outages in those areas.

This has also caused some localised broadband outages, because of the power outages.

The weather has not caused any underlying issues on the network and we expect this to be resolved once power is restored.

Due to the weather conditions, our technicians have been unable to access some of the sites that have been impacted by flooding and snow and we’re not expecting too much to change throughout the day.

Our teams are working hard with local authorities to get this resolved. We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers.

Further information on outages (as of 11am)

  • Currently 45 sites with mains power loss. The majority of these locations are Exchange building sites and have ample battery and/or generator sets on site.
  • There are currently 20 cell sites with a loss of mains power, 11 of these are experiencing outage as a result of no power.  We have seen a small amount of power restored in some areas, but unfortunately further mains power outages in other areas. A net improvement of 3 less sites down however.

OFF AIR: Akitio, Taihape Town, Apiti, Mt Ashcroft, Hunterville, Waiouru, Hihitahi, Utiku, Mangaweka, Te Pohue, Raupunga RBI

ON GENSET: Kimbolton, Riversdale Beach RBI, Opunake

ON BATTERY: Waverley, Tawa, Karamu, Lawrence, Glentunnel, Springfield

Latest update

  • PowerCo advise mains power is expected to restore to Hunterville, Taihape and Waiouru by approximately 13:00 today, This should restore a significant amount of power to Spark infrastructure.
  • However flooding and heavy snow are causing issues with access to many sites experiencing mains power loss.
  • We have an ongoing technical audio with counterparts in Downer, and have established a list of priority sites for generator deployment where possible.
  • Nearly 6000 households across the lower half of the North Island are without power.
