had an after thought it might be that,

unfortunately i dont know my pin number and dont feel i should punish myself and have to call up telecom to try and retieve it

You could press hash, after a few moments of listening to the voice spiel.  Then you can select the old fashioned way.  Or you could just go into a Telecom Store and ask them to fix it for you.  Then, when your PIN is reset, you can go into the voicemail settings and turn optional pin ON.  See, when it's ON, you don't need the pin, when it's OFF, you do!
