Hi

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. This is what happened to me last month... It's a bit sad really to have no Skinny internet at Christmas and New Year when family and friends visit and I think people need to be aware this can happen. I'm really upset about it but this situation is my fault.

I joined Skinny in September 2017 and purchased a router with a 100GB Broadband $52 a month 4G data plan.

I found out in November that I had to move because the house I rented was being sold.

I shifted just over 3 weeks ago and to be honest the last thing I thought about was my internet connection.

I am now at Mangakaretu Road, Waipapa, next to Kerikeri.

I plugged in my router at my new address. It connects and works fine and I used it for a week or so.

Then I remembered to call Skinny to tell them that I'd moved and they said I could not use my connection because this area is not on their coverage map.

The lady said they do send techies to add coverage spots like Mangakaretu Road but they are not told when this is going to happen and suggested I check their map from time to time. I was also informed that I was breaking their Terms and Conditions. Sorry about that so I did a quick speed test and then turned the router off. The test showed the Ping from my location to Auckland was 29mps, Download 28.27Mbps, Upload 21.61Mbps. The router had a 3 out of 3 bar connection.

I readily acknowledge that I should have checked with Skinny before I moved.

I like Skinny and I think their website is good. The lady I spoke to a couple of weeks ago was as helpful and obliging as she could be and it was good that she asked if there was anything they could do to help. On skinny.co.nz/coverage this address on 4G 1800 says 'Fair Connection' and on 4G 700 says 'Good Connection'.

I said to her the only thing she could do was see if a techie could come out here to see if they can add this site to their map.

I don't know much about fixed position 4G data connection but that's the reason I'm doing this post - first one ever!! I haven't cancelled my sub yet as I am hoping I could use it again soon.

Ask to speak to someone further up the heirarchy.

If I am understanding you correctly, the reason you supposedly cant receive is solely because 'their' computers say you cant receive a 4G signal at your new place?

I'm pretty sure a few here have gotten a 4G broadband connection where Skinny says they shouldnt be able to but their mobile phones (on the Skinny & Spark networks) say they can. Good Luck

@MrBob nothing to do with cellphone reception

no i believe what's happening is they are now in an area thats outside their fixed broadband coverage area. which likely means there is now enough capacity on the tower they are connected for for this type of service. which is why devices like this are generally tower or location locked. in this case it doesnt seem to be locked but becasue they OP contacted skinny they have been advised its against the T&C's.

not much you can do except wait.

@MrBob I'll definitely give Skinny a call tomorrow and talk to someone further up the hierarchy and try my luck.

@Jase2985 You're probably right but I hope that's not the case.

If further up the hierarchy fails. I'll give my notice and hope that Skinny comes through in the next 30 days. Fingers crossed.

Coverage for 4G WBB is often shorter than actually what 4G will do, this is done for network preformance.

While things on the edge can work, it can often badly affect the network overall.

DM me the address, I'll have a look from my end. Can't promise any magic but there could be a bit of a error in the mapping on the address.

Okay so, this one turned out to be far less exciting than a edge of a map or anything.

OP has moved to an area classed as Rural, Skinny don't offer the Rural product thus is why their system says no.

I've advised a move to Skinny VDSL so the OP can stick with skinny, prequals fit for about 60mbit (cabinet 500M down the road) closets adsl link (across the road) is rocking 19mbit so believable speed.

@hio77

Look I really appreciate all your time and effort. I understand why I can't have 4G Wireless Broadband. I will still be Skinny and I'll switch over to VDSL.  Considering I'm rural I'm pretty lucky to have a cabinet so close by.

Fingers crossed they don't sell this house under me!!

Happy to help :)

Sometimes these things just need an extra eye and a bit of time!
Skinny being technically still a seperate entity I'm a little pressed with what i can do.
But situations like this are rather universal.

Thanks for the post too, I'm never one to ask for anything in return for what i do here. So when folk do really appreciate it, the feedback that comes out is totally genuine; it's certainly loved by those far above me!

Probably best to make a new thread.

Likely the Rep is mistaken, i certainly have heard nothing - Last i checked Skinny recently introduced more stuff not preparing for a closure?

None the less; @LivingSkinny

Hey folks.

Very interesting thread and some good resolutions from above. @hio77 is correct about the wireless service. Unfortunately we don't offer our Wireless Broadband rurally so that will be why you couldn't get it at your new place @Jaluk. Hopefully you have a suitable VDSL connection once that is up and running!

As for our SIMs and devices no longer being sold in the Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery and Noel Leeming, this is because the Warehouse Group have decided to focus on their Warehouse Mobile and since Skinny is the biggest competitor for WM, they no longer want to stock us in their stores. Simple and makes sense.

Skinny as a brand however is continuing to push onwards and upwards and we are still available in lots of other locations including Grocery channels (Countdown, New World, Pak'n'Save), Electronics stores (Harvey Norman, Smith City, Jb HIfi) and also very much online. You will find us in a selection of dairies and petrol stations around the country too.

Hope that offers some clarity, feel free to message me or reply if you have any other questions.

Chris

Can I ask where you heard that by the way? Just so we can ensure people have the right information.
