Hey,

I have a problem with an Xtra ADSL internet connection.
Emails and most sites work perfectly but there are suddenly a few sites that can't be reached.  Seems to have started faulting last Thursday the 29/05.
A few sites that I am having trouble reaching are www.companies.govt.nz, www.vodafone.co.nz and the Help page of nz.yahoo.com.
I can access the main nz.yahoo.com and most of the sub pages though Surprised

I have checked DNS settings, router settings, rebooted router etc but it has made no difference.
The problem is not isolated to one PC as there are about 30 PCs on the network that all have the same problem.

Doing a ping on sites that aren't accessible returns the IP address but times out.
Doing a tracert gets to around 8-10 hops then times out.

Spent about 45 mins on the phone to Xtra help and they kept trying to get me to make changes on a PC even though I told them it was not related to this one PC.
In the end I sent them the tracert results of a couple of the dodgy sites and hung up.

Does this sound like an Xtra routing issue or could we have a faulty ADSL router?

We have the same issue on one of our xtra connections.

We can not access one of our customers.

I'm on telecom as well and the sites you mentioned work perfectly here.

Have you tried using another ISPs DNS servers?  Say TelstraClear or ICONZ?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I had thought about that but I didn't think it would make any difference.
I just tried anyway and I was correct and it still won't work.

It looks like a routing issue not a DNS issue.
If I try to ping one of the sites that is not working it returns the IP address OK but times out on the pings.

The only other thing I might try is change the username and password in the ADSL router from the Xtra ones to my home Xnet ones and see if that makes any difference.

Pinging a web address isn't always guaranteed to generate a response. Have you confirmed that the IP address that is resolved is in fact the correct IP address, sounds silly, but always good to check.

It could still be a DNS issue but internal? How are the PC's on your LAN setup? Do you have a proxy and/or an local DNS server? Have Microsoft Small Business Server running?

I'm guessing you've tried plugging straight into the DSL Router, letting DHCP do the work or setting your network settings manually and heading to the same sites?

As a side note, the Companies Office website can be a bit frustrating at times, but is alot better now than what it was a few years back. They still persist in using that Java quick search tool though, it's not very quick at all.

Pinging www.companies.govt.nz gets an IP of 203.97.62.216.
Putting this into the browser still gets no page displayed.
If I put that IP into my browser at home it goes to the companies website.

The server is running Windows Server 2003 with DNS and DHCP services.
The machines are set to get the DNS server IP via DHCP, which is the server IP - 192.168.0.1
On the server in the DNS service the forwarder is set to the router - 192.168.0.80
The router gets DNS server IPs automatically which are Xtra's DNS servers.
This has been the setup for 2-3 years now with no problems.

I have tried setting DNS servers manually on the server to Xtra's and Xnet's DNS servers and made no difference on either.

Hmmm..

Yup, sometimes things work without issue for a couple of years then no go. Keeps us in a job Surprised

Best bet is to try and isolate where the problem lies.

Setup a workstation or laptop to connect directly to the DSL router. From what I gather your settings should be:

IP: 192.168.0.??? (find a free IP in your range)
Sub: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.80 (IP of router)
DNS: 202.27.184.3 and 202.27.184.5 (old Xtra DNS, should be fine, or your Xnet DNS if you like)

Then jump into a command prompt on that workstation and type ipconfig /flushdns (just to be sure!)

Make sure you don't have any proxy server settings set in Internet Explorer.

Give it a go, may help to isolate the problem.

What brand/model of router do you have? Doesn't have some funky auto firewalling features... and you've tried to reset it?

The router is a Draytek Vigor2800.
I have tried reseting it and disabling all firewall and p2p/IM blocking rules etc.

Update:

Well it turns out that it was Telecom that caused the problem.
They upgraded or updated the exchange and this caused an issue with the Draytek.
A firmware upgrade on the Draytek and everything is running fine again.  All sites accessible.
