Today I decided I would test out my new phone (Huawei mate 10 pro) by performing some speed tests on the spark network. On my first test I got 220mbps download. About 2 hours passed and I checked how much data I had left. That test used (according to my phone) 200mb of my data which when I checked I had only used 20mb which this was from me using other apps. I then ran alot more speed tests using 1.8gb of data but this did not deduct from the data allowance so I wonder if speed testing to the spark server on ookla speed test is an unmetered connection?

For various reasons speedtests are not ‘unmetered’ or ‘zero-rated’. It’s likely to be a usage meter delay that will catch up.

But while doing speed tests I have exceeded my data allowance which was 1gb

I would have exceeded my data cap by 800mb and last time I Checked spark is quite strict on that

You probably have exceeded the data cap, but the usage meter is not always real time, there is a delay, it will take time to catch up. Then you get cut off ('till next month).

Are you a Prepay or postpay customer? Either should do real time counting this 2 hour delay in updating should no longer happen in any Telco

I am a prepay customer. There is only a 3min delay as I did a test uploading a 5mb file to google drive and my data allowance was updated within minutes

Then it's not eating the data

Am out of the office for the next week, but will get someone to check our zero-rating policies around this.

Do a speed test to a non Spark server and see if you get billed for it. It seems perfectly normal that Spark would have unmetered data to some servers in their own network.

Update : We’ve been trialing zero-rating of the Spark speedtest servers. This may change at any time.

Note this only applies to the Spark servers. So the OP’s experience is as expected (currently).
