Just thought people might be interested:

I had a reply back from BigPipe today to tell me they do full 1500 byte PPPoE now on fibre, 1500 Ethernet plus 8 byte PPPoE - 1508.

I'm with Spark but switching back to BP soon (BP couldn't offer fibre where I am earlier) so I asked them about MTU as a while back they only did the standard 1492 PPPoE. I get 1500 with Spark and a Mikrotik router setup for it but glad to hear BP now support it too. Saves mucking around reducing VPN MTU's because of the PPPoE overheads.

Yep they've supported this for quite a while - also 1508 on IPoE too.

I'm with BigPipe with a Gigabit Fibre connection. I think I understand but want to make sure I configure my ERL correctly.

See Unsupported-protocol-IPv6-Control-Protovol-0x8057-received for an unrelated issue and my current configuration.

What changes should I make exactly, and should mss-clamp be bumped to 1460 or removed entirely - will it default to something sensible based on the mtu?

Do I also need to configure all my other network devices - a DrayTek Vigor 2860 and ASUS RT N66 (for wireless) - for this to work as expected?

Finally, if anyone has any idea how to deal with the ipv6 warnings that would be a bonus.

Do these commands to use the overprovisioning of the fibre to get MTU 1500 from PPPoE:

set interfaces ethernet eth0 mtu 1508

set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 mtu 1508

set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 pppoe 0 mtu 1500

I have never used MSS clamping, but I think you will also need to remove that.

Thanks, this I didn't know. I haven't tried playing with IPoE in Mikrotik yet, but it wold be nice to not have to worry about PPP. Although, I can't say I've ever had an unplanned drop out with PPPoE on Spark yet.

From what I can tell on a Mikrotik, you don't need to increase the MTU when using a VLAN, but I've always set eth1 to 1512, VLAN to 1508 and PPPoE to 1500.

Although I see BP don't use VLAN on fibre. I'll go read up on IPoE now.

@fool did you manage to sort your ipv6 warnings? I've moved from IPoE to PPOE (because of Bigpipe not supporting IPV6 any more) and am now getting the same warnings, every minute. Thinking about it I'm not sure I've been moved to the "new" network at the Bigpipe end, so maybe it will just stop after that...

@phrozenpenguin I just updated the ERL to v1.10.5 and thought I'd check the logs on the Synology - it seems the warnings have stopped since 28/06. Finally!

Thanks for circling back. Mine have stopped as well; not sure if that was firmware or the Bigpipe > Spark (internal network) transition. Either way, my logs aren't filling up now!
