Hi, I got bigpipe naked vdsl today and my download speed on speedtest.net is 16mb to 18mb and upload speed is 4mb to 5mb which seems slower than advertised. The chorus guy came and activated the existing line of the previous tenant which was using adsl. I'm plugged in with a normal adsl N642 cable. The modem HG630b is showing that it's using vdsl.

I wasn't aware that I needed a special jack and I do have a spare ethernet cable which some posts suggest to connect directly to the jack, it's probably a cat5 (or do I need cat6) cable but I obviously can't connect that to the existing jack. What do I need to change and were they supposed to install a jack for vdsl? The jargon around vdsl is really confusing. I want to be clear on what to tell bigpipe if chorus can visit again to fix it or if I should downgrade. I'd rather fix the vdsl line if possible.

VDSL is UP TO 70-100Mbps down and UP TO 30-50Mbps up. so the speeds you are getting are fine for a vdsl service even if you think they are low.

Big pipe dont install a master filter and a dedicated VDSL jock point, its an extra cost, but that can make a difference depending on the quality of your wiring. you dont need it in some cases, but you dont generally know till after its all connected.

post your modem stats too please.

also depending on where you live someone on here might be able to install a master filter and a dedicated vdsl jack point for you.

once we have seen the line stats more will become clear.

VDSL is an "up to" speed that will depend on the distance you are from the cabinet or exchange and more importantly the quality of the internal wiring inside your house. There are literally hundreds of threads on here that explain this and answer your question in detail.

Internal wiring is your responsibility (homeowner owns it), not your RSP or Chorus. If you want the best from your connection you need to either install a master filter if you have a phone line, or ensure you isolate your connection to a single jack point if you don't.

I'm unsure why you'd want to go back to ADLS2+ - your upload in particular is vastly superior to what you'd get on ADSL2+, and your downstream won't be significantly higher.

Without seeing your xDSL sync stats it's not possible to comment with any certainty on your connection, but based on the good upstream I'd pick there is a reasonably high chance of internal bridge taps from excessive jack points hampering your downstream speed.

I'm in Alexandra so I'd have to get another visit from chorus or just stick with the slower vdsl.

It might be the wiring as there's another jack point and the chorus guy found another line on the main wall "exchange type" thing which doesn't seem to be connected to the other jack as he said that jack is coming of the same line as mine. That other line maybe the neighbors line though as there's another house on the same address. I'm wondering if I can just disconnect that line myself as I know roughly where it is although I'm not sure if that's the problem or the double jackpoints on the same line. I'll probably have to just live with it.

Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 22276

Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 7836

Downstream SNR (dB)  9

Upstream SNR (dB)  9.4

Downstream line attenuation (dB) 18.4

Upstream line attenuation (dB) 6.6

How would I isolate the phone jack? I'm assuming I need to disconnect the other one from this exchange box thing and I have this screwdriver which seems to be able to push the wires in. I'm hoping I don't need that special tool. It feels like diffusing a bomb in mission impossible. The two wires seem to be connected at 1 and 2 on top and the green wires are to the bottom 0. The chorus guy mentioned another line connected at 9 but he may have been talking about the one connected at 2 as there's nothing connected at 9. Is there some other way to disable the other jack point or is this the correct method? I'm thinking I have to pull out one pair of red and white wires and if its the wrong one then I push those back in and pull out the other two? The chorus guy did mention both jacks are on the same line so one of them may be stray and pulling this out may not do anything then.

Don't touch it unless you know what you're doing, and more importantly don't use a screwdriver if you don't have a proper krone tool.

It's impossible to tell your setup from that photo.
