Hi,

I'm not really sure if this is just me or not - so I thougth I'd ask if anyone else is having the same issues.

At about 8pm last night my router could only access New Zealand websites.  That is I could go to www.kiwibank.co.nz, stuff.co.nz,
telecom.co.nz!, anything.nz ... but once I tried to get to www.google.com - or anything outside NZ it failed.

Interestingly if I pinged www.google.com I would still get a response - so the DNS Servers somewhere must have been working.

Has anyone else had issues like this?  Does anyone know why it might be happening.  I have an (old) Connexant 4 port ADSL router .
I read on one of the other forums that the poster had to upgrade their firmware as a result of some upgrade Telcom did.. is this likely to be the case for me?

Anyway - any and all help most appreciated! At this rate - the sooner Telstra comes to my neighbourhood the better.

Thanks,
Patrick

I live in Christchurch and had exactly the same problem last night. Have not tried my home pc today so not sure whether Xtra is operating properly yet in my area. Wonder if Xtra was doing some end of June upgrade?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I experienced something similar in Canterbury, lasted until at least 11:30.  Surprised no outage reports anywhere today.  I checked again around 4:30 AM and it was back up.  Couldn't reach xtra or much else in New Zealand.  Could reach things on alter.net, load the default page on telecom.co.nz (but subsidary accesses wouldn't complete).   Could reach local equipment I knew the IP numbers for (DSLAMs and the like) with traceroute.   Had the look of route table entries not being populated.

Makes you wonder about how fragile a network is, and whether or not outage reporting should be mandatory.  These sorts of things used to be confined to a 10 - 15 minute period on Sunday mornings.  Rather convenient you can't call in a problem after 9 PM.

I am in New Plymouth and had the same problem at the same time. I am on Xtra and I could not get to xtra.co.nz to see if there was an outage because xtra.co.nz is in Australia? LOL

All the NZ sites that I wanted to get to worked but I could not get any sites outside of NZ (no MSN or Skype either). I did a couple of traces at the time that confirmed it was not my router, so I just accepted it was an  'Internet' problem.

I'm in Christchurch and had a similar issue yesterday.

According to the technician/engineer working in the cabinet across the road from my house, Telecom are launching ADSL2 services next week and they are scrambling to get everything sorted.
