Based on another thread, I took a look at Skinnys Roaming offer via an add on, $10 for 3 days access with minutes, text messages and more importantly data.

I am passing through Dubai on my way to, and then from, Europe and need to access the internet to play Pokemon Go while at the airport.
I am slightly concerned that WiFi may not be reliable enough for my requirements and want to have a backup plan, and the Skinny Roaming Add-on looks perfect.

As far as I can tell, I need to grab a Skinny SIM, assign myself a data plan ($9 will do) and then purchase a roaming add-on either at the Airport in Dubai or in NZ when I leave (loosing 17 hours of the 72 hours). On the way back, purchase another roaming add-on via the Skinny App ..

Am I missing anything

In theory that should work, but roaming data speeds can be worse than local Wifi at times.

Is there a reason you wouldn't also use the Skinny SIM to roam whilst in Europe?

You don't need a plan. You can buy a roaming add-on even when you're on standard rates.

@openmedia cause the data is routing from the home network so adds latency

Can confirm that Skinny Roaming worked perfectly in Dubai Airport for ~2 hours on the 2nd and 21st November when passing through.

It also worked in Europe when my European SIM card provider had an issue and was out for the entire day
