I'm looking for some information on what rural ADSL stats should look like. I'm attaching modem stats for 2 different households that are similar distance (~2.4km) from the exchange (Waitati, Otago). Both use DSL filters rather than a central splitter. One connect suffers from regular disconnects (was running a Linksys WAG120N, testing now with an old Vodafone supplied HG556a) where the other seems to stay keep DSL sync, but has 60 seconds of no data (Spark supplied HG630b). I'm thinking the problem is with the SNR - but looking for any pointers. Both lines have huge numbers of errors at times. Wondering if nothing can be done about the line stats - is there a recommended modem for conditions like these?

There is no problem with SNR - ddDLM sets it based on how stable the connection is - 6dB for a very stable connection, may go as high as 15dB for very very unstable, in 3dB steps.

That Spark connection is showing a very high error rate - very likely to be internal dwelling wiring if you are using plugin filter(s). Get a master splitter installed with a dedicated xDSL outlet to sort that.

Can;t see the errors on the other connection, but 37dB attenuation means a long line, or poor wiring - could be both. Again, cleaning up the internal wiring is the first step.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

The other thing that could cause high FEC and cyclic loss of connection but retaining xDSL sync would be interference from an electric fence, probably running nearby and parallel to the phone line.

Thanks for the pointers.

Working on a firmware update from the HG630b. Currently running B021, so can upgrade to B023.... as soon as the admin password is remembered.... Currently using user/HuaweiUser which doesn't allow firmware upgrades. admin/admin doesn't work

There is an electric fence line parallel to the feed up the road. Have had this turned on and off for testing, and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Will try and get some more information about the error timeframe (clusters or random).

Internal wiring is in CAT5 at both places. Splitter will be easy in one, and very much not easy at the other.

Any ideas re a more error tolerant modem option?

I'm not convinced 60 seconds of NDT will be errors. Connection will fall over before that.

I'd check there is no upload sessions regularly running.

So new firmware of the HG630b. Plenty of errors inside the first few minutes after connection:

Just noticed that the ADSL uptime on the old firmware was different on the front "Statistics" page and the "ADSL/VDSL" page. Maybe sync has been lost and I've been looking at the sync on the ADSL page. Will keep an eye on this on the new FW.

@hio77 - how do I check "there is no upload sessions regularly running"? Bulk of the internet traffic is on mobile devices and tablets at this place. No torrenting or anything like that.

With that amount of FEC (Forward Error Correction) going on I'd definitely call Spark and get a line test run on that line.

The fact that FEC is working so hard tells you that the data being sent down the ADSL line is being corrupted (between the Chorus exchange and your modem) - but there are many frames that the technology is able to recover the frame despite the corruption. My assumption here is that CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) stats refer to CRC failures, and frame discards (due to how badly corrupted they are).

This has the hallmarks of some sort of line issue - impossible to tell at this stage if the fault is with your internal wiring, or out in the street.

See if there's iCloud backup or similar running.
