Hi,

Over the last week I have seen an issue where FTP downloads from an overseas site transfer at 17kbs or less.... some get up to 3-4 MiB/s but most stick at 10-20kbs....

I have talked to spark, they have run line tests and they assure me nothing is wrong with my connection.... (i am sure it isnt them...)

Do the results below look normal?

Any advice would be great.....

300ish ping to Europe looks pretty normal.

The only thing kinda weird thing to me is the apparent leap from San Jose to Amsterdam in one go.. I'm guessing it's going through some sort of tunnel at that point, but I don't know enough about backbones interconnections to tell you what, why, if it's relevant or if I'm even right :-)

The ~10% packet loss that carries on from hop 7 doesn't look normal

Running a line test is pointless if local speedtest are good and the xDSL is not dropping out

Post a log of the connection negotiation? Are you able to try another provider eg over hotspot/another location?

I will try using a hot spot... or even someone elses connection...

Could it be that somehow my IP has been flagged as heavy usage and being QoS?

You said post a connection negotiation log... is this just the filezilla log when it connects? as all that shows is basic stuff....

just check for any errors eg failure to negotiate PASV

Are you able to do a traceroute showing the ip addresses along the path, or unhide the destination ip address?

forward dns doesnt resolve for the last hop you havent hidden.

The high packet loss concerns me and would totally explain your issue.

What datacenter is that in? is that testing over wifi? the loss and jitter doesnt' look like ethernet.

Based on the nodes i recognize there in ams.. i'd say you should be asking the far end provider as they are likely swapping thus hitting lows. (this is my #1 reaction when you say http is fast and ftp is slow.)

i've recently moved my machines to id3 so a tad more higher class bandwidth there.. but on single threads i have no problem pegging my 20mbit vdsl line

Not sure what datacenter this is in, but this testing is from a PC with Ethernet with a Fibre 200 connection.

I'm sufficiently suspicious of the packet loss along most of the route that I'd suggest logging it with Spark and once you've done, that, please PM me the incident number and a brief description (cut and paste of the troubleshooting you have done here would be fine) and I'll get it straight to someone that can have a look.

(They will need it logged properly before they can look at it)
