Visiting mum, and spark have been doing some work in her rural area on the outskirts of Auckland.

The old modem just blew up, and spark sent her a Huawei 659 , and she is on ADSL2.

Are these stats OK (a bit rusty on what is good/bad)...

Upstream line rate (kbit/s):1197
Downstream line rate (kbit/s):19773
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB):8
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB):6.2
Upstream line attenuation (dB):8.4
Downstream line attenuation (dB):16.5
Upstream output power (dBmV):10.1
Downstream output power (dBmV):18.8
Downstream interleave depth:None

The attenuation looks good I think, but , the noise coefficient (is that the SNR??) , is that good or bad?

If bad, could it be the house wiring?  Not sure if she has a splitter or not. Might require crawling under the house to see, not sure.

The reason I ask, is whether it is possible to move to VDSL, maybe not if that noise is too high.

My pick would be VDSL2 would deliver up up to around 70/30 based on those stats.

I'd say closer to 50/8...

Interesting. My speed is quite close to yours with ADSL2 but my attenuation is a lot higher

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 34 68
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 265 152
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 188 100
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 19192 1293

I'm apparently too far from the exchange for VDSL2.

Your line would be about 16-17mbit if you reboot it.

Downstream snr is running rather low to what your target is.

I live in Methven Mid Canterbury and been with Spark for about 10 years with good service overall and have been on VDLS  for about the past 6 years and had a master splitter, upgraded Modem and single point installed, about 700m from the cabinet and am getting speeds pretty much as promised give or take.

I'm told we will be getting fiber in 2022 and there is fiber to the cabinet as I understand.

The Problem is  I'm starting to get 'data creep' where the 38 mbs or so down speed is no longer what it used to be with the addition of each new data consuming device. Also I am noticing some US based hi res music streams are now becoming unlistenable due to buffering

DSL Phy Version: A2pvI042j1.d26b Status: Up Mode: VDSL2 Link Power State: L0   UpLink / DownLink SNR Margin (0.1 dBm): 53 / 56 Attenuation (0.1 dBm): 0 / 212 Output Power (0.1 dBm): 67 / 146 Attainable Rate (Kbps): 7288 / 42348 Rate (Kbps):

I have been in touch with spark and been told there is nothing they can do from their end.

Are there any options out there such as switching providers or re configuring my setup to get through the next 4 years.

Any thoughts /suggestions would be much appreciated.
