Silly question, but why list an MX for lightsurf.xtra.co.nz when it's not accepting mail?

This means instead of emailed replies to sms messages (see this) bouncing back immediately you get retry messages until your mail server decides sorry, it's not going to work out.

Clarify please, there is no MX record for lightsurf.xtra.co.nz, mail servers would attempt to use the A/AAAA record.

So perhaps they should put something behind it eg at least a non-existent no-reply@ email address to a real domain?

Well, yes. I'll leave it for Spark to address that question as I don't use the service myself.
