We’re leaving our current broadband provider because of poor customer service. Looking at Skinny even though it’s not our cheapest fibre option because Skinny gets high ratings for customer service on Canstarblue.

Anyone had any experience with Skinny customer service?

Recommend? Run away?

I've never had any problems but then again I never call them for technical support and when I originally joined I joined via the website. I guess it really depends on how much hand holding one wishes - if all one wishes is a an internet connection then left alone by the ISP then Skinny in my experience has provided the best service at a good price; all the thrills and none of the frills.

I tried recently to get some information on the Huawei HG659 from them, basically I wanted to know if the ATA VOIP software could be used with a VOIP provider. They didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

Off topic I know but the hg659s ata can be readily used on other voip providers, 2talk support docs have a setup note.

Have you thought about 2degrees due to the support here on Geekzone?

We've just started looking at 2Degrees yep!

Didn't know the 2D support on here was good, but threads look like a high proportion of folks are happy being with them.

So we're weighing up Skinny and 2Degrees fibre at this point.

Considering also whether to buy our own modem. That's a whole other lot of research for us though!

2degrees send out a fritzbox so why would you need another router?

I have recently connected to 2degrees fibre and fantastic start to finish

I would say the Fritzbox is a great residential router, but terrible wireless access point. Teamed up with something like Amplifi, and that's an awesome "no fuss" combo.

Is the 7490 provided by Skinny? Thought they sent out a Huawei HG659.

But have seen folks over in the 2Degrees forum talking about Fritzboxes. Wondering if would be a useful purchase to use with other providers, like 2Degrees. We're tending towards 2D at the moment (had lots of feedback re their good customer service) but still deciding how to proceed.

First we need to sort out issues with our current provider. Seems they want our short-term money more than our long-term custom.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Skinny currently provide the HG659.

This is the only supported device on skinnys network, If you choose to use another device that's up to you to configure and you will need to return back to the hg659 if your are having issues and require support.

The HG659b works well but the Fritzbox is just a far superior unit again
