Nup, won't work. it's a 900MHz phone and Telecom are building an 850MHz network. They may go down a umts 850 path as speculated in the media too so it still won't work.
Why you want to use such an old first-generation MMS wap2 phone is anyones guess.
Normal 3G phones will indeed work but only on 2100, there will be no fallback GSM if the signal degrades.
Currently there is TelecomNZ (530-05) signal on 850 MHz GSM and 2100 WCDMA in the Petone area. I can't log on but it's there.
