Spark appear to be passing traffic from their customers to REANNZ via the Auckland Peer Exchange (ape.nzix.net). I've confirmed this by testing with a couple of RIPE probes on their network.

I'm curious as to how open this peering arrangement is, or is planned to be in future? Other test destinations that are available via APE took different/longer paths.

Its not open peering, they are peeing only with NFL/REANNZ. So why do they refuse to peer with everyone else ? Because they can get away with it.

I assume the main motivator for this was because the Samknows local speed test servers are hosted by REANNZ, so before peering Spark traffic was going via Australia

Good for us though, local Linux mirrors are now "closer"

Spark VDSL:

traceroute to mirror.fsmg.org.nz (163.7.134.112), 64 hops max, 72 byte packets
1 router (192.168.1.1) 1.837 ms 2.146 ms 2.509 ms
2 * * *
3 222.152.41.213 (222.152.41.213) 14.627 ms 15.574 ms 15.610 ms
4 reannz.wix.nzix.net (202.7.0.171) 16.681 ms 14.373 ms 14.912 ms

I would guess it's because they run the N4L connections and they need quick access to stuff hosted by reannz.

Pretty sure that only affected N4L connections at the time, the rest of Spark still went via Australia
