Just moved onto Spark Wireless with a Huawei B618 modem - I have a networked printer, so being able to set a DHCP reservation for it would be a bonus. But I can't find the option in the admin page...

It is possible and I'm just missing the correct page to set it up, or is it not possible and I'll just to check and update PCs printer setup every time the printer restarts ('cos you know it's going to get a new IP just to be a PITA)

Thanks!

Why not just set a static IP in the printer?

What sort of printer is it? I haven't seen a printer for years that worries about IP changes as most use mDNS for communication between the PC and printer via the driver rather than need to hard code an IP address.

The B618 firmware that Spark and Skinny ships them with are quite locked down so most options that you think are there are not available.

Just set a static IP on the printer? Also make sure you modify the DHCP range not to include this.

Eg. DHCP range - 192.168.1.50 - 192.168.1.254
Printer - 192.168.1.2

Static - yeah an option, but it caused me grief in the past if LAN settings changed.

Did a bit more googling, and other customers of other ISPs in other countries complain about the same thing.

I can't get a list of current leases! Grrr... had to install Angry IP Scanner just to find out what the new IP was....

I have a similar issue with a fuji xerox (fairly new) colour laser printer. It used to even "pinch" an IP from another device and cause all kinds of issues. I have to find the IP every time I print now, with the same modem. I'm considering another device to handle DHCP.

If you login to the modem, go to Settings > Security > Device Management you'll get a listing of at least wireless connected devices. Not sure about wired.

If you require better management of certain features, throw another router behind the B618 and run double NAT. Its not going to affect anything and not like port forwarding is possible anyways since Spark is running CG-NAT.

This way you have full control behind the B618 and you just use it for termination.

Change the DHCP Range on the router to ensure it only provides a partial range to clients - I suspect you'll never have more than 50 DHCP Clients, so .2-100 should be plenty, then set a static above 100. Easy.
