I don't have a lot of customers with spark / spark routers but in the last month I've had 4 with issues of the router simply stopping the LAN's DHCP server. Wired & wireless clients sit there with auto-config range, and rebooting the router fixes the issue. Do Spark push through firmware updates? is there a bad one? (I haven't bothered to take note), seems wierd that I've had 4 cases all the same in such a short time frame.

Not a common fault no. first i've heard of it happening on the hg659b.

we update them remotely when they connect up.

forgot to mention the problem comes back in anything from a few minutes to 24 hours. Have been replacing the routers. Even a new one from the local spark store did it, within 24 hours.

I'd assume based on your description it's the 32 client limit issue. Nothing wrong with the router, just people with too many devices.

32 client limit? Is that including wifi ? Thats not exactly 'up there'. ANd 2 of them were just two person homes so I don't think so.

causes no data transfer not no ip allocation iirc. Been awhile since I've seen it.

I think it's 16 per wifi band or a total of 32 across both wifi bands and ethernet. Once you hit that limit, address assignment stops.

It's an older device, at the time when it came out that was massive.

The actual performance of the device itself is damn impressive for the cost of the device, so it really has stood it's time well.

We have since bought out a newer model.

We're a two person house and we would easily exceed the 32 device limit. It doesn't take much. A laptop each, a tablet each, a phone each, smart watches, multiple TV's streaming boxes, smart speakers, games consoles, NAS, wifi lights etc.... Very easy to reach.

My HG on Vodafone used to overheat and found it was the worst modem I even had, found it more stable when 5G wifi was off. Changed out to a ASUS RT-AC88U and never had any issues.

Not to mention more than 16 devices connected via Wi-Fi in a typical house to a single AP using a single band will impact router performance regardless of how expensive your router or AP is.

Having a limit is actually not a dumb move, and something other brands also have.

Not sure if this is related but I’ve been having a bit of trouble with mine lately. I noticed that when there is a lot of activity on the network say Plex streaming, large file downloading, online gaming the network just dies (no internet, no connectivity to my NAS or server). I have to go and physically reboot the router. When it happens, the DSL light is solid and all the Ethernet port lights are lit up. It’s like the router just gets overloaded and crashes the network. I’m thinking about getting one of the new models.
