Hi there

I have a basic web page/hosting/domain package with Spark NZ. It's called Basic Linux DIY and it's simple and compact and will do for now.

The package comes with a rudimentary site editing programme called 'Sitebuilder'.

I'd like to see if I can use software on my Windows HD instead of Sitebuilder to edit my web pages.

I called the Spark web service line and the guy there mentioned I should just go to WIX and let them take care of everything.

But I'd at least like to try and see if Wordpress can work with Spark Web Hosting first.

Anyone using Wordpress with Spark web hosting/pages? Any success stories?

I notice in the Dashboard - Applications menu there's an option to install Wordpress 4.1.1 to the Spark web hosting. I've tried this and it doesn't work. 'Unknown Error Message'. It might be because that app is way out of date. I've asked Spark about this error message and they've said to contact Wordpress to resolve the matter directly with them or find some other way to connect Wordpress into their system. All sounds a bit vague...

Cheers for any feedback.

TBH, go elsewhere - ISP "hosting" in my experience is extremely limiting, and support non-existent.

They obviously have no interest in supporting the system if they told you to go to Wordpress for help with their own system.

Cheers. Yes, I noticed that Vodafone bailed on web hosting a while back. This post is a long-shot. However, I might just find someone out there who has successfully got Wordpress running on Spark.

It is a very old version.  Pretty poor to offer an application install system that doesnt work and then tell you to go elsewhere for support.

If you wanted to do it your self then you should upload Wordpress to your root folder, setup a database and then run the wordpress installer at your web address.  I suspect you will then find all sorts of issues like not being able to control folder rights and so uploads etc not working.  Does it say what version of PHP they are running?

why would you want to install something with about 100 know Security Vulnerabilities some of which have a high-risk level with no support or easy to update path from your provider? Just do not go there.

Great. Those notes are very helpful. I'll have a crack on the weekend. As you point out, it could still lead to a failed mission. But happy to try. I found an 'advanced' tab which allows you to update the .php. Version 7 was the most recent one showing.

To be honest, I think it will be doing you a great favour if it fails to install.
If you have any intentions of doing anything vaguely useful with WordPress then spark is not the place to try it.

Can't you just install it on windows if you want to have a play?
Or you could use vmware and make a virtual Linux install and put WordPress on that.

Thanks for everyone's input. Some valid concerns raised. Good points.

It may be prudent to place a Wordpress site with another web hosting organisation.
