Hi,

The modem provided is the Spark Smart modem

https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/spark-smart-modem/

It's a white labeled device, so make and Model won't really help :)

Quite a good device too in my (limited) experience and from what I’ve heard. As mentioned it is whitelabeled (from Arcadyan).

There’s a good thread on all the ins and outs of it here on Geekzone too.

Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking of going down the Edgerouter X + Unifi AP AC Lite route for a smallish townhouse (100m2) with new fibre connection.... but by all accounts these new Smart Modems and associated Smart Mesh units are pretty good and it has left me wondering which would be the better option. Context is purely domestic (non enterprise) with switched cat 6 reticulation to all fixed clients and only mobile devices using wireless.  Quite used to and actually enjoy the technical aspects of getting under the hood of setting up domestic networks but if an out-the-box system reliably performs as well as a bespoke solution I’m quite happy to take the simpler life!

One of the main issues with using something like a UniFi AC Lite (or any ceiling mount radio like these) is that unless you have already run cabling into the roof in a central location for an AP then retrofitting is always going to be difficult. Something with an omnidirectional radiation pattern has the ability to potentially always offer better coverage than a poorly located ceiling mounted AP.

If you're primaraily using mobile devices then it's not going to make a huge performance difference, but the AC Lite is also only 2x2, so 3x3 or 4x4 devices won't see optimal performance from the UniFi - but having said that running more than 40MHz channels from a single AP if you're trying to cover a whole house isn't a good idea anyway.

There is an incresing number of mobile devices doing 4x4 on wifi...

Thought I'd add this here rather than making another thread. I changed to Unplan on Thursday and ordered a new modem. How long does the delivery take? Is there any way to track it online? All I've received is an e-mail thanking me for changing my plan.

Note that I'm in Auckland, not sure if this slows things down or not.
