Hi there Im considering buying a 5g phone and yes, I know Spark coverage is limited at this time.

But these images from the ad seem to indicate the phone wont work on our network, but will operate in Australia 5g:

The above indicates it will work, but the below indicates otherwise

Can anyone advise? if this is not compliant then there is no point in buying their 5g model, as the 4g is significantly cheaper.

That looks like a reasonably exotic device! Whilst it lists n78 (key 5G band for NZ at this stage) - it’s not officially, so will not be automatically provisioned. Other functions (such as VoLTE) may also struggle to fully work in NZ.

Thanks FreitASM has posted that Spark 5g wont provision with some phones unless you phone up your provider (Skinny).

Perhaps this is the case here?

Im not concerned about the other functions, as long as 4g works which clearly it does. However, if their 5g is inoperative, then may as well opt for another model.

Sadly, that is no guarantee for anything these days - my NZ purchased Telco-branded phone still isn't (as far as I know) supported by that Telco for VoLTE; it's most definitely NOT supported by their alternative (slightly cheaper) brand.

@jamesrt Did the carrier advertise the handset as VoLTE supported on its network?

Couldn't tell you any more - lack a time machine sufficiently capable of returning back to view the advertising material at the time of purchase.

The phone was sold as a telco-branded model; but isn't on their current list of VoLTE devices - I've queried this before, and was told that it's on the backlog (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=262196&page_no=4#2603594).

I expect, given that they didn't sell that many of them (the Jan 2021 NZ Covd Tracker stats suggest approx 750 deployments onto that model phone, AND the phone never made it into the Telco's stores that I saw; but was sold as branded via partners) it will stay on the backlog and never make it off it.

I’ll try and get an update for you next week - there was some work done, but not sure if it was successfully completed. At the time it was sold, we would not have marketed it as being VoLTE enabled (we only tag that after the required software update goes live).
