My very first post to Geekzone.

I live out in the wilds of NZ. and unfortunately have no other option but to use Spark ADSL for my broadband. Generally not too bad for my needs, download around 8Mbps, and upload of course only 1Mbps.

I listen to a lot of streamed music, and am somewhat frustrated when it goes off due to interference from the microwave....so why don't i get another router with dual band i thought. (Currently I have the bog standard router issued free by Spark.)

So i do my homework and purchase an Asus RT-AC66U B1 from Amazon Australia, except i forget to check whether or not this router will work on Spark ADSL.

i have tried Spark and Asus without much joy....any ideas please?

Hi and welcome to GZ, exactly which model router do you have, all the ones they have issued for the past few years are dual band so should not be an issue.

Edit, and forgot to say, that router does not do dsl of any description, but could be used as a wireless AP on the spark one.

That is not an ADSL router so it won't be suitable by itself. Technically you could put it on your network and just use it as a WiFi access point but you'll need to keep the existing ADSL router in place and do some config to disable the wifi on the Spark unit etc.

Ideally you'd get a new ADSL router with better Wifi.

Cheers - N

That device is just a router, not a modem. You can still use it though. I would put it in a basic AP mode so you aren't getting double NAT or anything, then disable the wireless on your modem.

Edit - snap, beaten to it.

It may just be me, but I find it ironic that amongst all the threads by people talking about "modems" for their fibre connection, we have the one OP who actually needs a modem and has bought a router!

Sorry OP, not trying to make light of your situation and if anything this is a reflection on ISPs perpetuating misunderstanding of what equipment does what

Maybe ask Spark if they can send you a new modem? Their Smart one is quite good - I'm using it right now. That way you'll also get full support from them as well.
