Kia ora whanau,

the new Netflix bundle finally prompted an upgrade from Bigpipe 100/100 to Spark Gigabit.

We were switched today, but i am struggling to get the old Bigpipe modem connecting - it’s the old Huawei HG659.

Help at Spark are lovely, but obviously support is limited with this modem now so i am at a bit of a loss.

ONT seems fine.

I presume i am just too cabbage to know what I am doing wrong. Restarted a bunch of times, i was presuming dropping in the spark username and password would be fine to work with previous bigpipe settings.

The HG659 shows:

Connection type: IP Routing PPP
MRU: 1482
MSS: 0
NAT type: NAPT

Link information
Enable VLAN: [off]

PPP information
PPP Authentication mode: PAP
PPP trigger mode: always online
Internet Account : user@spark.co.nz
Internet Password: password
PPP service name: [blank]

IP Information
IP protocol version IPv4 + IPv6
static DNS: [off]
IPv6 addressing type: SLAAC

if all else fails i’ll just invest in the new spark modem which supposedly has better wifi, but i feel like i should be able to get this working.

Any help appreciated.

Need to turn VLAN on for Spark (ID = 10). That should be the only difference from Bigpipe

From Spark's "Set Up A Non-Spark Modem" page.

Note the VLAN value of "10"

Set up Fibre on a non-Spark modem

First, check your modem's user guide to make sure your modem is compatible with fibre. If you have chosen a fibre plan with internet speeds of more than 100 Mbps, check that your modem is capable of that speed.

Use your modem's user guide to find where to change your modem's settings. Adjust the settings to match the following:

Operating mode: MDI/MDIX
PPP protocol: PPPoE
PPP username: user@spark.co.nz
PPP password: password
PPP auth type: PAP
PPP mode: Always on (dial on demand disabled)
Encapsulation: 802.1Q
PCP marking: 0
VID (or VLAN): 10
MTU: Auto or 1500

Note: You may not need to fill out all these fields. You don't need a specific PPP username and password, but you won't be able to connect if either field is blank.

That's magical, thank you!

I had indeed got that wrong.

Now 905 down, 380 up - not too awful for a free modem that's a few years out of date.
