hi all,

I am thinking of getting a SparkNZ connection, but wanted to know whether anyone knew / there were any rules against self hosting a blog at home, on a standard fibre line? There would not be much traffic and I see ports 80 / 443 are not blocked.

I also work from home as an IT professional and sometimes need incoming connections for API's / integrations my company might be developing (since we're all working remotely now anyway).

So I just wanted to check whether anyone knew whether this was likely to be an issue. I've checked the Spark T&C's (all levels) and dont see anything in there that would prevent it. But i thought i'd ask in any event.

Thanks in advance

Never been an issue, assuming that you're not doing illegal stuff (eg ch**d p**n etc).... lots of people host plex servers etc. I'd get a fixed ip if you can, and avoid CGNAT

If you're on a fixed ip, there is no reason why you can't open port 443 and serve your blog on it. I'd consider doing it. Make sure you know how to secure your stuff tho, its not hard to find open ports (shodan for eg).

Personally, I run inbound https, plex, a VPN (ok, it's wireguard/tailscale, so no port really needed)... I dont think I'd put something on the default hostname, tho - make it so that the gateway (nginx most likely) just kicks out anyone using just the IP...

I'd strongly recommend AGAINST running email on your own servers. Mostly cos getting your IP off blocklists etc is hard, and most "consumer endpoints" are auto-blocklisted. You'll just end up in everyone's spamtrap

hi,

thanks a lot - yes of course, definitely nothing dodgy! shucks!

no, just a blog and like I said, a couple inbound connections for work POC's / API's etc. yeah, i will run a reverse proxy into a couple internal boxes and firewall everything.

thanks a lot, appreciate the quick reply.

The only ISPs I know of to my knowledge that don't give you public facing IPs are 2degrees(you can request a static for a fee per month), Trustpower and MyR(static ip is available but please don't go with MyR).

If you go with Spark I'd actually advise going with Skinny instead(Spark owns Skinny and it's their cheaper sub brand) and take advantage of 6 months free.

Otherwise any Vocus branded ISPs (Orcon, Stuff, Slingshot) are good choices as well if you decide not to go with Spark.

If running a blog why not use something like Publii on Cloudflare Pages?

Free and you don't have to worry about DDoS at home or if IP address changes, etc.
