Hi Guys,

I've seen a few peoples routers (okay well two) now using user@xtrabb.co.nz (literally) instead of the normal accountname.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

Can anyone tell me how this works? I always thought the username was for registration purposes only (just like the old jetstreamgames realm limited you to certain servers/ip's) but the persons DLINK DSL-502T has user@xtrabb.co.nz in the wan settings but can definently go on the internet.

You no longer need to use a specific username as authentication as it is now tied to your physical line not to a user/pass. You could put anything into that input and it should work.

Unless you have a static IP address, which seems to still be tied to your specific username.

To connect to a Telecom Broadband connection you can use any username as long as it has @xtra.co.nz, @xtrabb.co.nz or @jetstreamgames.co.nz in it.

You will get assinged a dynamic IP address.

The only reason you need the correct username and password in your modem is if you have a static IP address or port 25 opened.

Ohh okay thats why I never noticed the change :) most of the xtra routers I would be setting up are for businesses that need both static ip and port 25 opened.

So how long has it been this way for residential users?
