Hey,
Just thought i'd let everyone know that Telecoms 3G 850MHz network is now live all over Hastings as it wasn't posted on here already and I can use my O2 UK sim to roam on it
Went from Hastings through to Taradale (Napier) today and it has pretty good coverage all the way there :)

Can anyone else roam onto it?
Or can no one else pick up the network yet? - I have a phone from the US that can use 850MHz 3G

The HB network isn't yet complete or optimised so you might encounter some issues... please be understanding

Have you tried using HSDPA? Or is that not available when roaming?

I tried making a voice call and as I have no credit on my O2 simcard it just went to the topup menu for O2 UK so voice calls work.
Just got someone to send me a text message and I received that fine.

I haven't used mobile data yet as i'm trying to download the web settings for the O2 network to my phone to try it (but it may not work anyway as I have no credit on there)

Are you using an American N95? Because the New Zealand version doesn't work in 850MHz - the American versions do.

I didnt know that.... is that original ones, or just 8GB ?

Could be my new handset at launch then. Although I do like the E51 - but a better camera would be nice.

You will have to check but AFAIK there aren't WCDMA handsets that operate in 2100/1900/1800/900/850 MHz all in one - not yet.

The iPhone is a handset that will work just fine on Telecom's new network - and will fail miserably on Vodafone's 900MHz network for example.

That's because the iPhone works on 850 and 2100MHz networks. There was a rumour a few months before the launch of the iPhone 3G of a new 900MHz model, but I've haven't heard anything since...

So if you buy an iPhone now you will use on Vodafone's 2100MHz network, but nowhere when on their "extended" coverage. Then simply pop a Telecom SIM card and off you go.

It probably was. The rumours were going around a couple of months before the Vodafone announcement of the iPhone distribution - when Vodafone was also working on a 900 MHz network. This is because people would be instantly put off if knowing that their new handset would work only on the "old" part of Vodafone's network.

As I said, all rumours, no substance.

Some overseas forums have been quoting the Iphone 3G 2.5 version as having the upgraded radio, this was dated back to june / July last year, before 900mhz was even available, speculation and untruth as has been said.

I would imagine as 900Mhz is still in its early stages commercially it may be towards the end of this year or even next year before a re release iphone with a 900mhz radio is available & that depends on the growth of 3G market in that freq which will pick up this year especially in Europe and a to a lesser degree in Aus & Asia this year.

I guess Apple being a US based company have centred the 3G component around the North american UMTS standards, key being 850Mhz & 1900 and for Europe and else where 2100mhz.

It works on EDGE & GSM else where so at the moment why would they re release until they can sell a bundle of them.

My personal prediction is that the need for 850 or 900 WCDMA specific devices will end later this year.

Qualcomm resolved the spectrum interference issues between WCDMA850 and WCDMA900 in their device RF chipsets last year so I would expect OEM's (such as Nokia) to start producing devices later this year.

Time will tell.
